People never bother to realize their ineptness and correct themselves because of audacity(reckless daring or impudent). Your guess here was right for audacity. Because they don't want to show due respect for another person or impertinent. They will not do their learning from others. But they are not stupid, as stupid is inability to learn.

Being arrogant is the height of stupidity I think.Arrogance stops you from learning more,arrogance gets you false respect,arrogance will never get you true friends.So only the stupids will remain arrogant.
