How long does it take to grow out your natural fingernails?

About four months ago, I started growing out my natural nails for the first time in decades. And, it was going pretty well for awhile. But, then I started getting nervous again and nibbling at my fingernails. Next thing you know half my nails are broken and brittle and the other half are in serious need of repair. So, now that I haven't been biting my nails for almost two weeks, they are finally starting to grow. Well, they are growing a little! And, I was wondering, just how long does it take to grow out a set of natural finger nails? Are there any tricks for making finger nails grow any faster or prevent them from breaking? Would appreciate suggestions.

Hi Beautyqueen! I have just the solution for you to aquire and keep long natural nails! It works for me anyway. Once a week I sit down and give myself a manicure. Usually on the weekend and it only takes me about an hour sometimes less. I get MANY compliments and half the time many argue with me that those are NOT your nails! lol Oh contraire..... The first thing I do is remove my old polish. I usually only wear clear on my fingers and then paint my toes a nice color. (You can also use these techniques on your toes) Then I file them, I dont like them pointy or really round so I sort of file them square almost like the salons would do with acrylics. I bought a buffer, just like the salons use and buff them, a few swipes back and forth across the nail will do. I then wash them and scrub them with a nail brush, or an old toothbrush will do just fine. Then I apply cuticle remover. I use Sally Hansens, its under $5 and it will last you several months. I leave it on as the directions indicate on the back of the package usually about 8 minutes. Then I use a cuticle stick to push the cuticle back gently. I actually purchased a metal pusher that can be washed and sterilized and used over and over. Very worth the $15 dollars I spent on it. I got it from Sally Beauty Supply, vs buying bag of 6 at $2 a pop. Again I use my toothbrush or nail brush to remove the cuticle gel and the loose cuticle. Dry and polish! Vuala! Keeping the cuticle away from the nail is what allows it to grow. You can even just push them back daily with the tip of your nail, just be careful not to damage your cuticle any. The buffing of the nail is very important as well, it not only keeps your bed smooth and free from snagging things but it also keeps the bed nice and pink and your tips extremely white. This is why I only use clear polish because it looks as if I have a french manicure and I really dont. I sure hope this helps you. I used to spend lots of money to have long nice nails, just for convience. But if you really think about it, you spend 2 or more hours sometimes in a salon waiting to get your nails done and it costs you 3 times as much as to do them at home. I think they are much nicer looking natural, and much more admirable. Good Luck! xx

I would assume everyone’s nails grow at different speeds- just like our hair. I use a clear coat on my nails to make them stronger- which prevents breaking and chipping. My nails grow pretty fast- I find that I’m cutting them down a lot- I can’t type fast with longer nails- and I can’t use the adding machine- both things I do daily with my job. I can usually grow out my fingernails in a week- if I’m using the clear coat to protect them- Try using a clear coat- I use one from Fuller Brush- (company we own at work)- I think Sally Hansen has a great one too.

Actually, I think it depends on the person. My grow like crazy in the hot weather. Grow out as in how long? Past your finger tip? Why not try Sally Hanson nail fortifier. and I've heard that food with protein helps the nail growth also. Protein is also good for hair growth. Good luck.

It doesn't take too long for me, I have ever since a natural long nails and I love them, friends would usually comment how do I grow them and If I don't find it hard to maintain them. I guess I was so used of having my nails long and If I cut it too short I don't feel comfortable. I don't have any tips on how to make it grow faster, but some friends says putting some garlic will prevent it from breaking..I don't do it though as i hate the smell of garlic.:)

Mine doesn't take long to grow at all. After two weeks they have grown a bit more. I usually have to clip them short because I can't type with long nails and they always break anyways because of what I do around the house, or when i play games with my son, i am forever breaking one or two!

well to grow them twice the size they are normaly it takes me about the same time as you. The way I keep them is I cut them short using only nail clipers, and than only shape them with nail clipers untill they are about 3mm long. I tr not to use nail polish as much as posible and avoid using nail polish remover. My nails are strong so I dont have problems at all.

I have grown my natural nails once upon a time ago. Lol. It was when I was a teenager. It took me six weeks to have a nice looking natural nails with medium length. I agree with you that once your nails get longer, it becomes more fragile and easier to break. My tip is to avoid washing the dishes without using any gloves. Dish soap can make the nails weak. Immediately after washing the dishes if you don't wear gloves, you will notice that your nails are very soft and prone to break very easily. Another tip is never soak your finger in water for more than one minute. This will make your nails weak too and when they are dry they will break easily. If your skin is not allergic to baby oil you can put them on your nails. My friend does this and her nails are strong and shining. Good luck.

well if you think of the damage you have done to your nails whilst using fake nails, then i would say a good 6 months of keeping them short and constant cutting them until they get stronger, jojoba oil is really good for nails as well and you might even consider a hair & nail vitamin as well.

For me, never! My nails will grow and then one by one break or chip and I get frustrated and cut them all. I have never had long nails no matter what I did. My mother always wanted long nails and it wasn't happening for either. Part is all the typing. I couldn't type with long nails and I type a LOT. But I wish I could get two handfuls of long nails all at once just one time for a while but, as soon as I do, one breaks and then it is the domino effect. *sigh
