What are the differences between a townhouse and a regular house?

A townhouse is a glorified apartment, usually with two levels that is part of a larger building with at least two units attached. You purchase the unit you live in but you only own half the house. Condominiums are similar but are usually a little more spacious.

A townhouse has common / shared walls with other townhouses. A regular house - as I'm sure you know doesn't. That's the difference :)

I believe a townhouse is a small two story apartment,. There may be a balcony & there may, or may not be a small backyard. A regular house is one story only, on a block of land with a garage & front & back yard. In Australia regular block is often 1/4 acre, like ours.

A regular house is generally detached, where a townhouses are row homes, with 4 to 6 houses attached. UNless you're on an end unit you won't have any "side" windows. The yard would be much smaller and townhouses are generally 2 stories or more to fit everything into a narrower space.
