Sensitive female issue: cysts on the ovary

I have had little experience with this issue. I had a cyst on an ovary years ago and had no trouble with it. But have a family member who recently announced a pregnancy, then said it was a tubal pregnancy. Now we hear that she is in the hospital with a cyst that ruptured and that she may have to have surgery. From those I have talked to, surgery would be a last resort, we did hear tonight that they released her from the hospital and said they may still do a surgery but need to perform other tests. Anyone have any idea what's going on? We are not exactly on speaking terms with this young lady but are very concerned about her. She is 18. I would like to hear from those who maybe have experienced something like this or know of someone who has experienced this, and maybe offer some advice or input.
