Well this is our first hamster experience. We got a girl "Belle". We were going to get 3 (one for each kid) but figured we'd start with one and work our way from there. I didn't know until the guy at the pet store told us that you cannot put more than one in the same cage because they will fight and become territorial. Does anyone have more than one in a cage? Do they fight? The other thing I learned tonight is that dwarf hamsters are exotic pets and need some special type of licensing. Who would have thought?

...Didn't the pet store provide license? My other thought is how is this enforced? The police do not go door to door to see if you have a license for your dog let alone your hamster! ...We had teddy bear hamster and we needed to keep them in separate cages too. They fight and will kill each other or breed. Then you have to watch carefully that mom doesn't kill babies or babies do not kill each other. ...Good luck with that. Been there, done that, glad they are gone. ...Peace be with you. =(^;^)= Della

You are so right about the police going door to door...LOL!! They gave us some forms to fill out but that was it. I wonder how come in the store they are all in the same cage - well the females were all together in one cage. Maybe they are too little to fight yet. Thanks for your response.

I've never had dwarf hamsters. I do have hamsters though and they share their cage. But they have also been in the same cage since they were winged from their mom. If you have a male and female I would suggest separate cages, because hamsters breed like crazy. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Well, here's something from my experience, since a have a pair of dwarf hamsters @ home, in the same cage. It makes a huge difference to put them toghether from the begining, as they're born. Apart from that, they have a tendency to fight and be territorial, as you said it... my hamsters have short matches every now and then, nothing to dramatic though. They get along fine most of the time. If babies are involved, the parents should be separated, mother remaining with babies approx. one month. Hope this helps, if you have any more questions, do not hesitate ask them here.
