i recently had to put down my kitty companion of 19 yrs. although this is considered a long life for most animals, i am having a hard time with her loss. we had her put down because of her behaviors, such as losing her hearing, not finding the litter box and pooping all over the house, constant crying and her body had begun to give out on her as in walking, that you could see she was in pain etc. i think the main reason i am having a rough time of it is because, i believe she should have been taken by god's hand and not our's. although she went peacefully at home with our vets assistance etc, it's still hard for me to even think about. did we do the right thing is my biggest question !

Making the decision to put a beloved pet out of their misery is one of the hardest decisions I think..... having had to do it twice, once with an older dog who had cancer and once with a puppy who had been hit by a car and had both front legs shattered... I understand what you are going through. Try to remember the joy your pet brought you, and you will eventually find peace that you did the right thing.

thank you for your kind words. and sorry that you've had to endure the same thing. i know she was loved to the fullest and i know she gave love unconditionally. time will heal my sorrow, some day !

Well first - I am sorry for your loss. Second - yes - of course you did the right thing. Your poor animal was suffering and in pain. She had no quality of life. Cats are dignified and clean creatures - even the fact that she could not find her litter tray would have stressed and upset her, and the constant crying was quite likely because she was in pain. You did the kindest thing. In my view, the last and kindest thing we can do for our much loved pets is to make their passing peaceful, quick and pain-free. I always think it is a pity that human beings cannot have that dignity too. I have always kept cats and have always done as you did when the time was right. It is our last gesture of love to our pets - to free them of their pain. So mourn for her, but please do not feel guilty - you have done nothing wrong except love her.

If you had her put down because she was in a lot of pain, you did the right thing. No animal deserves to suffer. I would also hate to have a pet put to sleep, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, especially if you're putting an end to the suffering. Your kitty is with you in spirit.
