Why is it called World Champion?

Some sports in United States such as baseball gets their champions to be called as World Champion. Is it far fetched for the tournament to be referred to as World Championship/Series when the contestants mainly from the states only? Unlike Soccer/Football World Cup tournament whereby representatives from all continents get to compete. What do you think?
