Do you use the dishwasher or wash by hand?

We have a dishwasher. My husband likes to pile absolutely everything in the dishwasher, & run it when it is only half full. In my mind, this is a waste of water, electricity & dishwasher powder. I prefer to handwash saucepans, frying pans & anything with bad stains on it. I also prefer to wait until the dishwasher is completely full, before running it. How do you wash your dishes?

I pretty much feel the same way you do. The problem we have around here is: nobody wants to put the clean dishes away after the dishwasher is done. Next thing I know I have a sink full of dirty dishes with crusted on food (I guess nobody believes in rinsing off plates a such either) that I almost have to clean anyway BEFORE I put them in the dishwasher. It's funny you bringing up this discussion as I just got home from work, saw the sink full again, and was just deciding whether or not to have a "new" rule that from now on everyone has to wash, rinse, dry AND put away their own dishes, including the pots and pans.

I have the same problem with putting away dishes from the dishwasher. It is me who usually does it.

I use a dishwasher. When I was looking for an apartment, I was afraid I wouldn't get one with a dishwasher. I was so thankful this apartment had one, because it doesn't have a garbage disposal. I'd have to be really careful on what went down the drain.

Me neither. But where my parents currently live, they have a garbage disposal, and boy does it come in handy.

I would LOVE a dishwasher, although I am told it is on the bottom of the repair list. When we moved into the house we are living in everything was broken, the ex had lived in it 2 years prior and was pissed she did not get it in the divorce so after a year of living here we are not closer to getting a dishwasher than when we first moved here. So with that said, all the dishes in the house get washed by ME, whether I like it or not.

I have tried that before all it got me was double the dishes the next day, which was even worse, seems my family knew how to do dishes before I arrived but have forgotten how to do it since

One day if you don't feel like washing the dishes, just leave them & see what happens!

half-full to me would be a waste of water and electricity too. unfortunately i don't have a dishwasher; so i'm stuck doing dishes the old fashioned way..by my hands. apparently my hands are the only ones with the particular skill and talent required to wash dishes. the members of my household hold my mastery of dish washing in such high regard that they don't even attempt to interfere and therefore ruin my "art". LMAO!! yeah right, nobody else wants to get off their duff and do them!!

Hi, i normally do the dishes twice a day, and with my hands and while i am cooking food, and hat hardly leaves any utensils for later then. I agree the dishwasher takes too much of place, electricity and is not economical at all, and beside that, i feel that the dishes are not always thoroughly clean with that too, something or the other is always left on the dishes, mopre so the pans and those things with oil in it, and as a tis we have to re-do them, where as doing the dishes with hands makes them cleaner and also, we save up on the bills. I dont let the dishes really pile up, though there are some days incase we have to go out etc, but then we all share the dishes that day, and things are normal then for us, we normally do dishes along side, as we eat, we normally do our own plates, all the family members, and that leaves me very few dishes to do in the end of the day.

Yes, that is normally the case, but the problem lies in the huge pile of dishes that lands in the end of the day and just seeing that makes us think twice and feel like a burden, so i feel that if we know we have to do the dishes and would rather have 2 smaller quantities in 2 bits, its better to have it that ways, earlier i also used to do them once a day, but found this better, of course there are many days when i too do it once a day, but thats an option with me then. Have a nice day :)

I do the exact same thing. It is a waste of water and electricity to run the dishwasher and/or the clothes washer if it isn't full. Pots and pans don't seem to get as clean if put into the dishwasher so I wash them by hand too and I use antibacterial soap to be sure all germs are killed however it's not wise to use that in a country home with your own septic tank because it kills the germs there too and the waste fills faster. But having lupus I have to use antibacterial soap but I use Rid-X once a month which is full of bacteria and lowers the waste in our septic system. It's stuff in a box you buy at the store and you put it in your toilet so it goes right to the septic tank.

With my other house on Kangaroo Island, we have to use special detegerents too. Most of the home is in septic tank, but the newer homes have to put in an enirocycle. This is a system of two tanks & a pump. All home wastes go to it. There are special bacteria in it to convert the waste to grey water, which must be used to water the garden. So for dishwasher there, I can only use biodegradable liquids.

Wow. That's really interesting Jenny. Thanks for telling me. I love learning new things. Maybe it's something the USA should adopt for it is a good system.

I wash pots by hand as I don't have a dishwasher. I would love to have one, but as I rent there is not always the space for a dishwasher. I like the fact that the dishes can be hidden away in the dishwasher and the sink area doesn't look cluttered, I hate to see lots of dishes waiting to be washed, it looks so messy.

Well, even having a dishwasher doesn't solve that problem of dishes lying around. Someone still has to put them in!!

Unfortunately, we don't have any dishwasher so we only use our hands to clean the plates. We sometimes use rubber gloves, sometimes barehands too. It is much easier to wash kitchen pots and pans by hands, so we can thoroughly clean it and detailed spot cleaning.

First of all, we don't have a dishwasher at home. In fact, I have never even seen a dishwasher before. Lol.. Really. It is true. At home, we wash our plates by hand. Using a liquid soap, then rubbing the plates and cleaning it with water.. Walla.. Dishwashing is finished. I do am curious and even looking forward to seeing a dishwasher. I might even try to consider buying one if only I have the money to buy one. :)

I always use the dishwasher, and I wait until it's full before I run it. My pots and pans and baking dishes usually get washed by hand. My nephew and his wife have a weird habit of washing their dishes by hand and then putting them in the dishwasher to dry. The dishwasher works fine, when they do use it. They will leave their clean dishes in there, storing them until they're ready to use them.

I clean the dishes a bit before dumping them in the dishwasher, too. We have a double dish drawer machine by Fisher/Paykel so I can run one drawer while loading the other. It does a very nice job of cleaning with only about a gallon of water each load and finishes in just 26 minutes. As a result there are no arguments about wasting water or electricity or having dirty dishes lying around on the counter. It is very quiet, too. I must say, though, that the new hand dish washing liquids are such an improvement over the old ones that it is not nearly as distasteful a task to hand wash things from time to time as it used to be. All the little beads of grease cutters and scumbusters and the delightful new scents are just great!

Fisher/ Paykel is an excellent brand. Our washing machine & fridge are both that brand. I also rinse dishes first, but there are some naughty people in my house who do not rinse their plate & hence, some foods stick.

Washing dishes is my pet hate, because there is always something better I could be doing. I like to keep my place clean so of course I have to wash my dishes, by hand. I have always complained about washing dishes and that I would love to have a dishwasher. The strange thing is, I have a dishwasher now but I haven't used it. I will use it, when I have guests around. Like you Jenny I hate wasting.

It is very handy to have the dishwasher when there are guests. This saves them the need to offer to help with the washing.

I find if your guests over to help out with dishes, it can be a great opportunity to have a gas bag. For someone who hates washing dishes I take them up on the offer more often than not. The strange thing is, when I am helping my friends with their dishes, it doesn't bother me. Strange!

I never use use my dishwasher as it uses way to much energy and water for me. I am thinking of having it removed to give more cupboard space.

I don't have a dishwasher and don't think have a plan to buy one. Even we sometimes have a lot of dishes to be wash we never think to use a dishwasher one day. I'm happy already with doing the dishes by hand. I don't really have a problem with that, plus I can really check and see , if the dishes that we do is really clean or not.

Actually, I like to do dishes the same way you do. It saves water and the pans can be greasy and make plastics harder to clean. There is no use in wasting water or electricity for no reason. Sometimes the old fashioned way is the better solution.

I wonder if we do burn up calories by handwashing dishes? That is worth thinking about.
