Question for piano players and teachers

For piano players: At what age did you start playing? Did you ask for lessons or was it something that your parents just signed you up for? Did they make you stick with it even if you asked to stop or did they let you drop out of you wanted to? Or did you want to stay with the lessons because you enjoyed them?
For the teachers: At what age do you usually start teaching children to play? Do you teach special needs children, or does someone usually specialize in something like that? I know that they can take more patience and not everyone has the patience for it, but I didn't know if there were specialized classes that were offered to help instructors learn how to train special needs children or not?
Both of our sons love to play on the piano, but I don't know if it is serious enough to warrant paying for lessons or not. Our oldest has been diagnosed with non-verbal Autism and is 8 1/2 and he has always loved music, especially the piano. Our other son is only 17 months old, but he also loves sitting at the piano, playing on it. I am sure he is to young right now, and I don't want to "push" them into something they may resent me for later, but I would love to get lessons for my oldest, since he enjoys it so much, I'm just not sure how easy it will be.
