i am appalled by my 2 1/2 yrs old behavior lately it seems as if just about everytime she poops in her diaper she has to stick her hand in it and it ends up on her toys or walls. I thought that maybe this meant she was uncomfortable in her diaper and wanted to potty train so i tried the potty training scene again and she just wont she refuses to, i dont know what to do but i dont know if i can stomach another cleaning spree in her room. i ahve done everyting from making her help in cleaning it up to the corner to being stuck in her room "grounded" is more like it no playing no tv etc , to bed early what can i do is this a phase she'll soon outgrow?? my oldest he did this once but he was around 14 or so months and he didnt actually stick his hand down his diaper he removed the whole diaper so im at a loss conisdering with him it was just that once and she has done this on NUMEROUS occasions. any helpful advice or even hope that this will pass would be much appreciated!

My oldest son used to do this when he was little. I don't know it's about either, but he just kind of grew out of it!

yes, this is a phase that a lot of kids go through. It's probably because 1) they are fascinated that they can produce something in their diaper 2) poo it mushy and probably feels good to play with 3) you can smear it and use it like fingerpaint. so, a lot of kids think it's a fun activity to do. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't discipline and train your daughter though to know that it's not acceptable. When you notice her starting to play around with her poop, tell her no and put her on a time-out, then give her something comparable to play with. Just be consistent with this and you will train her out of it. Kids do all sorts of gross things, and I feel for you having to be on poop patrol; it's nasty to deal with those things. And you can tell her "ewww, now mommy has to clean this up, gross!" make a grossed-out face and look disappointed. That is powerful too.
