This might be a gross discussion...

I have read that colonic irrigation is good for weight loss (not to mention constipation!) and I am interested in trying it but a little hesitant about it too. I am also not crazy about the cost. Recently I read some stuff online about enemas, and I wonder what's the difference between colonic irrigation and enema, or are they pretty much the same thing? What do you guys think about this?

I have heard different reviews about colon hydrotherapy. One camp believes that the body is carrying around pounds of waste in the colon and lower intestines. Getting rid of it eliminates toxims. Another camp says that colon hydrotherapy interrupts the natural flora/balance of the human system. It won't kill you but is not beneficial as stated. They feel that there is a reason we have extra in our colon and it naturally works its way out. The difference between colon irrigation and enemas is the irrigation involves shooting water up into the colon pretty far to flush the system where an enema does not penetrate as deeply. The intent of the enema is to loosen so that things can pass naturally, not totally obliterate anything that is there. You can purchase an enema over the counter most times or there are probably many you can formulate yourself as they have come from home remedies originally.

I wanted to add one more thing. The weight loss from a colon hydrotherapy is temporary. That is why proponents recommend that you do a series close together up front and do it on a regular basis. I DO NOT recommend it for anyone whose sole intent is weight loss. Afterall, weight loss is not about weighing a couple pounds less on the scale but feeling healthier and looking healthier/slimmer as well. the number on the scale is not all there is.

You're right. It shouldn't be seen as a be-all-end-all for weight loss. I read an article about colon cleanses in general (including the pills too) and the author suggested that maybe you should just eat more fiber instead. I think there is a good point there, but I can't help thinking about some of the stuff you hear about colon cleanses about all of the stuff that might be stuck in there! Thank you for responding!

There may be things stuck in there but our bodies are really equipped to handle things unless we put a foreign object or something that is not supposed to be edible. It is up to us to help it work more efficiently. While the jury is still out with me on whether colon cleanses are beneficial or not, I think that the best remedy is not to put toxins in our bodies in the first place if we can avoid it...the ones we have control over anyways. Read labels. Don't put MSG and other chemicals in our systems. And eat as many naturally grown, no strange additive foods as possible.
