Do you ping your blog?

Recently, I was reading that we're supposed to send pings every time our blog is updated. And, I just wanted to know if that was true? I am familiar with the concept of "pinging" a blog. But, I haven't done that in years. Could someone tell me where I would go to "ping" a blog. I used a site several years back that was fantastic for that purpose. But, I can't remember the name. Would love some help on this subject. Thanks!

The automatic pinging doesn't necessarily applied to just blogs that are hosted at wordpress.com or blogger.com. The pinging automatically done after you hit POST/PUBLISH even if you host the blog yourself at your own domain and use 3rd party blog software such as wordpress or movable type

Oh yes, I do and I am using mainly technorati at the moment and people could add me to their favourites too! It's technorati.com and you could check that out. For another one, I remember it's something pinggoat.com. Not it's if it's still there but I used that awhile back and I think it allows you to ping your blog with quite a number of the sites. Good luck.

A lot depends on what blog hosting you use - some like Wordpress.com incorporate an automatic ping every time you update. Blogger pings too, but not sure how many search engines and directories. I find it is always safest to ping your blog anyway, that way you know it is done. Two good ping services are Ping-o-matic and Pingmyblog.com. I prefer the latter and I always ping my blogs when I update. I know that technorati is supposed to automatically get pings when you update if you are listed with technorati, but since they are so malfunctional half the time, I usually do a separate technorati ping as well. Pinging your blog will alert the major search engines and blog directories that you have updated and will help to make sure that your blog is properly indexed which will then get you better search engine traffic.
