How to speed up the computer?

my computer has gone very slow. the windows starts up okay but the computer takes too much time to process. i tried removing the programs that i dont use (which freed up 10 Gb of space) and also run the defragmentation program but it did not help me much. then i thought that the problem maybe some spywares but i run a check and removed the spywares but the computer is still slow. what else can i do? please help

I think you shoule re-install windows xp sp2 a system and then install more of a memory.CPU or update.
