Should members of the Police Force be allowed to wear their Sikh's Turbans?

....whilst on duty? http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0821/turban.html In Ireland, our police force has a uniform which includes a cap. Recently, a member of the Sikh community applied to join the Garda/police force and asked could he wear his turban while on duty. But he was refused permission on the basis that the prescribed uniform does not include a turban. According to Harpreet Singh, President of Irish Sikh Council, asking a Sikh community member to get rid of his turban "is like asking him to remove his head". I personally am undecided about this, on one hand I would like people to be able to express their different religion beliefs but on the other I think that people should stick to rules. What do you think?

Unfortunatly, these people(and I use this word loosly)have basickly destroyed the reputation of the R.C.M.P. here in Canada as well as other traditions we held for many years on this stupidity. If they wish to keep their religious beleifs, this is fine, but if it interferes with a countries traditions then stay away from those places or jobs. If we went to their country and told them they cad to conform to my customs,I would be deported or killed,so why should we give up our customs for them, they are comming here for a new life,so they are the ones that should change, not us. sorry for the rant, and I do not mean any disrespect to their kind. Please forgive me if I ruffled a few feathers.

well, while I do feel that a lot of the Muslim community are wishing to destroy our traditions and values, I have never noticed anything such as this about Sikh's.

When we had to wear nursing caps in for work the Mennonite women did not have to take off their head wear the could wear their head scarf and not the nursing cap. I feel the new cop should be able to wear the turban if is is in his religion. I am from the USA and we have the right to practice our own religion. Do the jewish men that are in Ireland police force had to take off their Yamahas or are there any Jewish men on the force? Great question

I don't believe there are any practicing Jewish men on the Irish police force, in fact I believe this is the first time the issue of religious head gear has arisen for this country.

There's no gray area here at all. The uniform code is the uniform code for all, no exceptions. If you cannot abide by the uniform code for whatever reason, then you don't apply for the job. It's simple. If I apply for a job as a waitress in a topless bar, and I tell the boss that I, for religious reasons, cannot take my top off... I would expect the person to tell me to get out and stop wasting their time. It would be stupid of me to apply for the job in the first place knowing that I cannot follow the rules. If the guy can't follow the rules, for whatever reason, then he should never have applied for the job. No exceptions should have to be made. This is just ridiculous.
