What's working in your house? Does paying kids by the chore help build a work ethic?

With my nine year old I use a notebook. Any extra chores he does gets noted and how much I will pay for it. Then every few weeks he adds up and I pay out. Sometimes he looses some money, if he doesn't do his regular chores he might loose a bit of money. He wants to buy a game for his game cube so this is a good way of saving money. My second son doesn't like to get money for chores, he is 13 and says that he does things because he wants to understand how I feel when I have to work all day cleaning, cooking etc. So he gets a bit of pocket money every few weeks, usually when we go somewhere. I always resented helping my Mom at home. I'm the oldest and the only girl and always felt that I had to do more than my brothers because of that. So I try not to put to much on my kids. But sometimes there is only so much time and I have only so much energy that getting the kids to help really is good. The problem I have is my 5 year wanting to do everything but never being able to do things really well. I often let her try but I know that I have to do things again. Still it is sweet of her.

Extras yes. :) I do expect a minimum amount of chores to be done regardless of pay though. IE cleaning rooms, putting away clothes, taking out trash is mandatory. Weeding, vacuuming etc. are extra.
