What is it about slugs?

My sidewalk normally had some (maybe 3) slugs on it after a rain, and mostly at night and not always. Well, last weekend we planted plants in our yard and I have been watering them every day this week. Now, during the day I find quite a bit of slugs on our walk which isn't so bad, but at night the sidewalk is CAKED with slugs?! It's so disgusting. There are big ones, little ones, and sometimes they accidently get squashed. Does anyone know how to get rid of them, or atleast make it not so many? My friend suggested maybe sprinkling salt around the sidewalk on either side. Do you think that would work? I think maybe our drought and hot having so much rain is causing them to just love my walk-- but I really don't want these critters ;( Any ideas?
