Do you purposely turn off the TV in your home or does it drone on endlessly?

Usually, during meals--unless we are eating in front of it--I turn off the television. When no one else is home besides me, I would rather have it off and listen to music. When my hubby and the kids are in the house, the TV is usually on rather uselessly. If I shut it off, someone somewhere in the house complains they were watching it. What's it like in your home?

In the last three weeks, the TV here has only been on once - admittedly, I am in China, and there are only two English tv channels where I am, and they only run English programs from about 7.30pm every night, so there's not really much incentive to turn it on.
I generally prefer to listen to music anyway, if I want background noise.

I have to admit, I really haven't missed TV all that much. I've been here 8 months now, and on average, I'd say I only watch something once a fortnight.

My cat doesn't care if the tv is on or not. I have the tv on whether I'm watching it or not. I just like to have the noise. even if I'm listening to the radio or cds or something...oh yeah I totally leave the tv on. I Don't really think much of it. I just like to have it on.
It's off when I sleep and when I'm not home.

I love the way you started the response with your cat. My dog does watch Lassie and the cats often sit in front of the tv and stare at it, but I think they just like the movement of the light. My dog actually runs to the living room when he hears the little boy shout, "LAAASSSIIIE" at the beginning of the show, and his name is Maxxx, so I figure it's because he likes the show.

ha ha. Cute. Reggie Cat watches tv once in a while. he seems to be fascinated with jazz type music and violins and such. So if there is something on tv ( and that's so not my style of music ) he'll watch it intently. otherwise he usually ignores it.
it's so cute when pets watch tv. they reall are like little kids.

Well- it's either the TV or the radio- I love sounds- something eerie about typing on the computer and only hearing the keystrokes- The music is always on at dinner- no TV---
sundays- the tv is always on- watching football- don't have to watch it if you can listen to it-
It's funny in my house- my daughter switches the tv- from a program to the music stations!

I love the music on our tv subscriptions. There is a good variety of decade choices and types of music. I love all kinds of music. My husband gets annoyed if I used the music only stations. He says there is supposed to be a picture on the screen, or else why have the tv on. On the music stations we have it just identifies the music and artist but there are no visuals. I don't mind, because I'm just listening, but it annoys my husband.

Our tv generally just drones on when neither of us is watching it. Usually, after awhile I suggest turning it off and listening to music instead and my boyfriend will get this surprised look on his face like he didn't even notice the tv was on and agree that music would be a lot more pleasant.

The most annoying time for TV for me is late night, like 11:30 when the David Letterman show starts. I am usually tired enough that I would rather just go to sleep than watch the show, no matter who is on. Even if I like who is on, I usually can't stay awake. Sometimes I have to bug the hubby to turn it off. Sometimes I fall asleep first and don't even know if he does turn it off. Apparently sometimes he falls asleep then wakes up around two and shuts it off.

For me, the television is on when there is something I want to "watch". I mostly have one ear and one eye on the television because I am on the computer. But if there is nothing on I will definitely turn it off. I am energy conscious so I get annoyed when I go upstairs and a kid has walked away and left the television on. Or even the ceiling fan in the bedroom. I am turning anything off that is not being used. Anything I can do to keep my bills down!

Mine is on from morning with my first cup of coffee until I go to bed at night. I watch special programs but the rest of the time I just listen and watch it if I hear anything interesting. I even leave it on if I just just go grocery shopping to keep my dogs company!!!

Just about the same here as it is for you. I prefer the television off. I don't even need music, most of the time. I just like the quiet, unless I am specifically watching a movie or a show. Everyone else here just walks in the door and automatically turns on the television and leaves it on whether they are watching it or not. I guess they like the backround noise.
I can live without backround noise.

Hello kbkbooks, I usually purposely turn off the TV in our house specially when I am alone and no one is watching. We have a TV in the living room and its rather the same case as with yours. It would go on endlessly and uselessly when the kids are in the house. If I found no one watching I would turn it off and leave, after a while I would find it turned on again.
I guess kids just love having it on even if at times they are doing something else and not watching. They would tell me they are waiting for another show to come on so it better to leave it on. :-)
