is downloading music a crime?

Do you believe that downloading free music is a crime? I believe it is because you are not supporting the artists whom made the music. I use itunes because this way the artist gets money for their hard work. I wouldnt want to do a job and not get paid for it. What do you guys think? Im looking for both sides of the argument. If you can change my mind ill give you a virtual cookie. lol
