A wonderful SWAN at a distance of 5 feets from me

swan in a canal in Lelystad - swan in a canal in my town

This shot I took today in my town. The swan on the photo remained while I was coming near but his partner got in the water. I took some shots of them both in the water too. My partner kept telling me to not get too close as he might bite me, but I continued toward him, and than I started taking shots of him. He let me take the shots and than gracefully went in the water and I followed both of them for about 30 minutes while taking shots of them and the surroundings. Love these birds, and every chance I get to take some shots - I do:)

30 minutes you were following them? Oh what a good person you are, THEFORTUNES. Just for the sake of myLot members to share....thanks for your efforts, thoughts and providing this picture to me. It really look beautiful and delicious to me. Because I like their meat for this type of bird. It is the same species a s duck and goose. I love their meat especially this is the canal type swan and not the farming swam. :::michael:::

Thanks for liking the bird Michael ;) But I cannot see myself eating ever a swan, as I find them too gracelful and nice, and enjoy watching them swim around, alone or in couples, and groups. TheFortunes

You got a really great shot! It is really cool that it let you get that close. Maybe you are like a Dr. Doolittle type, who can speak to animals. : )

They are so gorgeous, thanks so much for the picture! We have a large flock of black swans and white swans at our local zoo. They have a large lake there with all kinds of birds. They sell special feed for them and we love buying up a bunch of the feed and sitting out on the dock to feed them. Many will come up and eat right out of your hand. It's wonderful to be so close to such beautiful creatures. We also have a bicycle/walking path next to the river here. We go there often with large bags of feed corn and feed the geese and ducks down there. There are usually a large number of Blue and White Herons around too. It's very relaxing and they are so much fun to watch. During the winter when the river freezes over we go down there to watch the bald eagles fishing off the sand bars. Can you tell we spend a lot of time bird watching? LOL.

Hi Craftcatcher ;) and thanks for contributing with your story and how much you like swans too ;) These birds are so gorgeous, and the fact that they eat from ourhand must tell us something, like, they are not afraid of us no matter how bad we could be with birds and animals alike. This makes us see that humanity could take some good points from the animals and make this our own ;) Bird watching is one of the things that is calming me beyond belief, and am glad that you expirience the same and take the tim for doing it too ;) TheForunes

Try feeding them. I've had swans walk up and take food right out of my hands - you'd be surprised how audacious these birds are.

Swans are certainly some of the prettiest and most graceful of animals. You did a great job with this picture. I love the way he is looking at you and his open mouth makes it look like he's talking to you! Nice composition and clarity. You take good photos.

Another great shot there! :) Oh, yes one does have to be careful with the larger waterfowl type birds, as they can give a nasty bite....I don't know about swans in general, but I do know Canada Geese can have a temper,....thus maybe the term "goose"??? LOL

Hi Pyewacket, and thank you my friend ;) I know that someday I'll be able to make the prettiest and nicecst photo of a swan, or at least I hope so ;) And no, swan do not seem to bite us like geeses do, they seem to be able to not be afraid of our kind, especially the photo making human kind ;) TheFortunes
