I loved to read as a kid, and would often get lost for hours in my favourite mystery series, which was 'Trixie Belden.' The first one I ever read was 'The Secret of the Mansion,' and after that, I read every one I could get my hands on. Please share your favourites here, and what it was you loved about them.

The Hidden Staircase-The 2nd Nancy Drew book - Nancy Drew books
Wow--talk about memory lane here...funny I never heard of Trixie Belden...who knows might go to the library and get those books out as it isn't beyond me to read children's book even now. Nope--I grew up in the Nancy Drew world....my mom had read them when she was a kid, and passed it down to me, and like you who gobbled up all the Trixie Beldon books, I gobbled up all the Nancy Drew books beginning with the first, The Secret of the Old Clock...do you know that the "author" Carolyn Keene was representative of many authors..and that the books are still written today?I show a cover of the second in the series..the yellow series I guess you can call it, as this is exactly how the books looked when I was a kid

There are some really great children's books. Actually, you can order Trixie Belden books online too. There are many sites on this particular series. I'm not sure why I never 'read' Nancy Drew books. I love those stories too. Did you know that there are a whole series of Nancy Drew computer games? They're terrific, and my daughter and I used to play them together from the time she was around ten. Now that she's sixteen, those days are gone, although the odd time she will 'still' express a bit of an interest in them. They have such wonderful graphics etc., and the titles are based on various books from the series. Thanks so much for your response, and for the 'book cover photo.' Here's one of the very first Trixie Belden books from the series. The cover is 'exactly' the way I remember it.:)

I've never heard of this series of books, but they sound very interesting. I loved to go to the school library too, even though I owned many of the Trixie Belden books. I still enjoy children's books too. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I had forgotten about Choose Your Own Adventure books. I, too, loved those as a young reader. I'll have to see if there are newer ones out for my daughter. She would get a kick out of them. She is only in first grade so is not a strong reader yet, but we could read them together.

One series I loved that isn't well known were The Happy Hollister books. They were about the kids in the family who found themselves in situations where they had to solve mysteries. I think I just liked the family element. Another series were the books about the Melendy family by Elizabeth Enright. The kids in this family were close knit, and seemed like regular kids (I always saw myself as Randy) but also had different adventures. I also liked the books because they were set during and just after World War II, which is one of my favorite periods of time.

I think I've heard of the Happy Hollister books, unless I'm remembering something else. I don't recall the ones about the Melendy family, but I'm sure I'd find them fascinating as well, as I also love this time in history. Thanks for sharing.

it's the book called 'The Enchanted Tree' and if i'm not mistaken, it should be by Enid Blyton. i was like so hooked on it. I read and reread it for what must seems like a thousand times. it's nice because it talks about this tree where they have different houses at every 'level' and they have those stories on pixies, elves, fairies. The best part was that at the most top of the trees, there will always be a different type of magical world there that you will never know until you are there. Sigh...it kinda make me want to read it again.....

I've never heard of this book either, but it sounds fascinating, as I enjoy fantasy too. I re-read many of my favourite books too, and would often get even more out of them a second time etc. I know what you mean about wanting to re-read some of these. Thanks for your response.

As far as I can remember, the only Book Series that I was addicted to was the Nancy Drew series when I was about 11 years, I don't really see it as a children's book, but it's around that genre :)

Many seem to really love the Nancy Drew series, and I'm sure they're a great read. I've seen her stories on t.v., and also have played the computer games with my daughter. They're wonderful and very creative. Actually, the Trixie Belden books are aimed at older kids, as Trixie is thirteen when the series starts. Thanks for your response, and welcome to myLot.

Nancy Drew does seem to be a real favourite of many. I'm not sure why I never did read these books. The computer games are great though, and I discovered these a few years back, and my daughter and I used to play them together. I've heard the Hardy Boys series is good as well, but never read those either. Thanks for sharing, and welcome to myLot.

The Nancy Drew computer games are great, and there are many of them. Go to www.Amazon.com and check them out. I just looked, and they have a huge selection. Some of the newest ones, are for Windows XP, but there are older ones too. You can order them right from Amazon. Take Care.

Oh yes, I loved Trixie Belden. I read every one of them that I could get my hands on too! I did read the entire series. When I was growing up, I read everything that I could get my hands on. Thankfully my mother took me to the library whenever I wanted to go pretty much so I was able to check out all the books I wanted. She would even leave me there for hours during the summer. It was great! So I read all the kids series books Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Black Stallion, Bobbsey Twins, Three Investigators, all of them and more! My favorite books were the horse books since I had a serious addiction to horses [still have that to this day too!]. And at school when the Scholastic book order papers came out, it was so exciting! I got to order most of what I wanted which was always plenty so I got tons of books of my own that way too. Books have always been an extremely important part of my life!

As far as I can remember, I first discovered Trixie Belden books in the school library, and loved them so much. After this, I started to receive them for birthdays, and Christmas. They were my absolute favourites. I also enjoyed the 'Donna Parker' series, if you're familiar with those. I've never read the Nancy Drew books, but there are great computer games out, that my daughter and I used to play together when she was younger. They're very educational and have wonderful graphics, etc. Thanks for sharing.

I forgot to mention but...my neice loves series books as well. She loves the American Girl books and the Magic Tree House series. I will buy her anything like that to get her to read. If you can read you've got it made.

I read books as a kid, but I didn't have any series type books available to me. My parents didn't take us to the library or buy any books for us, occassionally they would let me order a book from our scholastic book club at school. I used to look forward to getting those papers and getting to pick out a book just for me. Funny how I can remember some of the books but not the titles. My favorite one was a story about a young boy in Chicago I think who was poor growing up and he befreinded a cat, I remember that the cat got ran over and I cried or wait, was that a tv movie? I can't remember, it was a very long time ago. But I always encouraged my kids to read and I ALWAYS bought them books, from early on I did that. Today they are grown and very smart and still avid readers. A book can take you anywhere you want to go.

Hi applsofgld, My mom bought me books for birthdays or Christmas, but I did a lot of my 'series reading' from the books available at the school library. I didn't go to public librairies either. I used to buy my daughter books from Scholastic, when she was in elementary school, and they were great, and very reasonably priced too. We have some of her favourites put away, for when she may have kids of her own someday. She's an avid reader to this day too. Thanks for your response.

I loved the series of "Anne of Green Gables" books. I also liked the choose your own adbventures and would read the book over and over untill I had picked several different endings!LOL I had a girl friend growing up in grade school that was huge into Nancy Drew but not me...Can't get into the clues and the mysteries...Not my style. I really like love stories or "sappy" or "sad" books etc. True stories are great also. For Children I must agree with your first responder and say Dr. Seuss is my all time favourite!

Hi heavenschild, Yes, the Anne of Green Gables books are wonderful, and such classics here. I believe you're the second one, to mention The Choose Your Own Adventures series. I missed those somehow. Nancy Drew is very popular, although I preferred Trixie Belden. I just love mystery books, and they were my favourites back then, although I enjoy many different types. I'm a huge fan of the 'Little House' series too. Dr. Seuss is another popular choice. Thanks for sharing here, and have a great day.:)

Choose your own adventures were great! You would read the first few pages and then it would give you a choice "If you want to do this turn to page 10 if you want to go there go to page 20" and you would read on from your choice until the adventure ended. I liked it because it was like I was choosing the story and I could re-read it with the other ending(s)after :)

Trixie Belden was a favorite of mine as well as Nancy Drew. I'd love to start collecting those books again. I grew up with them and they instilled my love of clues and mysteries. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Hi twoey, I'm glad you enjoyed Trixie too. Take a look at one of the previous responses here, and you'll see 'both' a Nancy Drew, and a Trixie Belden book cover. It'd be great to get ahold of some of these favourites again, as I'm not sure what happened to the ones I used to own. I 'still' love clues and mysteries. Thanks for sharing.

I had a couple of favorite series. The first one that pops to mind is The Chronicles of Narnia. I loved those books. The stories were so great. The next series that comes to mind are all the Nancy Drew books. I loved all the mystery and trying to figure out who the bad guy was.

The Chronicles stories are great, although I never actually read them, but I do love the 'Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' movie. So many love the Nancy Drew series, and I feel 'almost' cheated that I didn't read them. I'm sure they're wonderful, if the great computer games are any comparison. Thanks for your response.

As a young reader, just like now, I read pretty much anything I could get my hands on. One series of books that I remember loving was the Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary. I have started collecting some of those so I can pass them down to my kids when the time comes.

I would say the Ramona books were geared towards girls around age 10. The first book in the series starts with a 10 year old girl and her little annoying sister, Ramona. Here is a link to the other books in the series: www.beverlycleary.com/books/ramona_books.html Thanks for the welcome to MyLot. I'm having a lot of fun so far!

My favorite was the Babysitters Club. I loved those books. When I was a kid there were like 80 of them and I tried to read as many as I could. I also liked the Babysitters Club Mystery series. Another set of books that I really liked (they weren't completely a series, I guess) were the Amelia Bedelia books. I thought they were so funny when I was a kid.

Sorry I missed responding to this. The Babysitter's Club is great, and my niece really used to be into them, when she was the right age. I've also heard very good things about the 'Amelia' books. Thanks so much for your response.
