Why do people fear going to the dentist? I am lucky because my aunty was a dentist and I spend so much time there that I am so used to the whole thing and dont have a problem. Every day after school I used to wait for my father at her office. What can make you not fear going there?

Well I am not particularly scared of dentists - though I don't particularly like them either - but I will have to enlist your help for my partner because he is absolutely terrified of them! It is the only thing I have ever seen make him shake with fear:-(( In his case, I think it must go back to childhood. He was bought up in South America, and some of the standards of dental health and dentistry there were, let's say, not as good as those in Europe, the States, or Australia. So he had a lot of bad and painful experiences as a child like having teeth extracted without anaesthetic - and it has just stuck with him.

Well I see what you mean, but I doubt he would agree. He does go when he has to - but he wouldn't want to be near a dentists's surgery anymore than he absolutely has to! LOL!

yeah I went to a kids one as well since I was 5 and they had a very kids friendly office I loved that. If I felt that my tooth was hurting or was going to fall I would get my heath card and go alone to the dentist (it was about 300m from our house)

I think that people fear going to the dentist because there is always that possibility of pain involved. I know that I had heard so many horror stories about root canals, that when I needed one, I put it off until the pain was unbearable. The root canal wasn't bad at all...if only I hadn't listened to all the people talking about how bad they were. If I had just gone ahead and had the root canal when the problem started, I could have avoided 6 months of pain.

You are right about the pain bit as we dont usually go when everything is ok. The only thing I am scared about dentist is wisdom teeth I hear that it is painful a lot.

Some people say that going to the dentist is as bad as going to hospital to have surgery. With the dentist... you actually have surgery while awake. I think that is the thing people fear. I don't enjoy going to the dentist... but at the same time... I have all my fillings done without any injection. Simply because I like to walk out of there without any discomfort from an injection which last for two or three hours. I think it is mostly about how much pain you can take. There are a lot of people who cannot take any pain at all. They need to be put under before even having the injection. I am use to pain and can take more than most. But still don't like the dentist. It is a pain (pardon the pun).
