Devotion for Monday, September 24

Psalm 16:11 You will make known to me the path of life; In your presence is fullness of joy; In your right hand there are pleasures forever. I absolutely detest movies that are so predictable you can see the end coming three minutes past the opening credits. Saturday night, I was sitting with my grandmother. Grandma loves old Alfred Hitchcock mystery movies. Since American Movie Classics was doing 7 days of Hitchcock last week, we ended up watching three of them back to back. Not one of them ended the way I thought it should have! I was so frustrated by the third one that I wanted to launch the remote at the television set. But seeing that Grandma is kind of fond of her tv, I simply buried my head into a throw pillow and screamed instead. This made Grandma laugh. “Honey, you ought to know by now that his movies are going to end like that!” Like the movies, our lives don’t always follow the path that we think they should. Some of the twists and turns are caused by decisions that those around us make. They effect our lives and we end up off the beaten path. Sometimes though, we make choices that take us into the wild blue yonder. It is then that we have to search our hearts and seek God to get back on the straight and narrow. But! If our lives were like the mundane movies with the predictable plots, and you knew how they were going to end…how could we experience the joy of finding our way back into the arms of our Heavenly Father?

Truthfully I have nothing to add, but I wanted you to know that I appreciate this devotion today. It has a special resonance this particular Monday.

It never ceases to amaze me how God will guide me to write something, and it so often will speak to someone's heart specifically that day. It is when I don't follow what He's telling me to write that the devotionals flop. I'm glad he spoke to you.
