Bad weather, my mad moggie always knows. Does your cat know rain is on its way??

Moomin the weather cat - Moomin seems to know when the weather will be bad
September 25, 2007 7:29am CST
I am certain my daft cat should be on the television as a weather forecaster. The sky was blue and the sun shining this morning and I opened the kitchen door to let Moomin out for the day. He walked out into the garden, checked his territory, stopped, sniffed the air and pelted back inside. Ten minutes later the weather turned really nasty. Heavy torrential rain and high winds pounded the back garden while Moomin sat in the window watching as the rain hammered against the glass. It's not the first time Moomin has given advance warning of some bad weather, but I wondered if your cats ever give you some kind of warning of rain, sleet or snow.

Cats are very good at that type of thing. Have you heard of Oscar the cat? It was in the news a couple of months ago. A nursing home in Rhode Island has a cat named Oscar who knows when a patient is about to die. He curls up with them and keeps them company the last few hours. Cats are very complicated and intelligent in many ways. We'll probally never know what exaclly gives them these strange ablities but their very intersting!

Hi Hun, sounds like Moomin is very talented at weather forcasting lol. I don't have cats as I am alergic, and my shihtzu Katie doesn't really seem to feel like giving us any indication the weather is going to change. The dog that I had before the one I have now would always let me know when the weather was about to change though. He'd sniff the air, quickly do his business, and bolt inside if it was going to turn bad. If the weather was going to stay nice though he would sniff the air, and take his time doing his business. I guess some animals embrace the talent while others ignore it, in a lot of ways they are just like us.

One of my dogs always knows in advance when there is a thunderstorm on the way as she hates thunder. BTW my grandmother insisted she could smell rain coming and she was always right!!

Neither my cat, nor my dogs, give signals of impending weather changes. But my aunt used to have a dog that would crawl under the table, or under a bed, for seemingly no reason. But then, moments later, thunder would boom, and a rain storm would kick up. That dog knew every time!!

What a clever little kitty you have Sweety! Moomin really is a clever clogs - wish my cat Tia would do that but I am afraid even if she could predict the weather she wouldn't give us any fore warning - that doesn't fit in with her arrogant personality! xxxx

Moomin is far too clever I'm afraid, what with managing to open doors and forcasting the weather, the little smartie pants. LOL

Aww--your Moomin is adorable...he looks so content in that photo...I take it that's your bed..uh,..his bed?? LOL Cats usually aren't dopes...LOL...Animals in general are a bit psychic when it comes to a drastic change of weather, and not only weather, but can predict things like earthquakes as well. Also, my two pampered brats couldn't give a hoot about the weather..they've always been indoor cats and know they don't have to experience the outdoors...although my one kitty, Kissy is terrified of rainstorms...an even before I hear the first drop of rain pelting down will make a bee-line to hid under my bed and won't come out until the storm is over

LOL yes that used to be my bed. "Pampered brats" wonderful description of your cats hun, and one I need to use for Moomin on occasion. He's outside this morning, sitting out in the garden and watching the bird table, and practicing his stalking when the birds come to feed.

I think all animals have a special sense about things we know nothing about, we think we are superior but only in some ways, animals are far moe atuned to many things maybe they are the superior ones...

Yup Moomin is definitely superior to us :-) I guess I should watch more often and get the advance warning

Our cat also seems to know when it's going to rain. She sprints through the house, running up and down steps and around furniture. This only happens when it's about to storm. I watch as she runs and eventually wears herself out. Generally sleeps the rest of the day during the storm. It's interesting to watch.

My cats don't seem to know, the other day Gizmo was outside and it started to rain so I went down to let her in but she didn't come. The next time I went down she was outside the door soaking wet and miaowing pitifully to come in. Her fur is so thick I don't think she can even feel the rain till she's soaked through.

LOL poor Gizmo, Moomin has frequently been out in the rain when I've not been home to open the door and a bedraggled and soggy moggy is generally hiding under the patio table when I get back.

Your cat is really interesting to have the ability to foretell the weather. His reaction to the weather is very interesting to me. It is nice to have a natural weather forcaster in your house. The cat is a cool stuff. I cannot help giving him a hug for it. lol

My cat seems to know as well and she gets all scared and freaky and then slinks down low and goes to the basement. It's kind of weird but it's good to see her do it as I know there's something on its way.

Cats are more intelligent that we give them credit for I guess. Right now Moomin is curled up asleep, and the rain is still falling

We used to have a cat that was afraid of thunder storms. He would hide under the bed. But he would always go under the bed before we had any signs of the storm. And he wouldn't come out until the storm was over. When ever he ran under my bed I knew a thunder storm wasn't far behind.
