(From Yahoo! news) By JENNIFER DOBNER, Associated Press Writer 5 minutes ago ST. GEORGE, Utah - The leader of a polygamous Mormon splinter group was convicted Tuesday of being an accomplice to rape for performing a wedding between a 19-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl. Warren Jeffs, 51, could get life in prison after a trial that threw a spotlight on a renegade community along the Arizona-Utah line where as many as 10,000 of Jeffs' followers practice plural marriage and revere him as a mighty prophet with dominion over their salvation. __________________________________________________________________________________ What do you think of that? Seriously. My husband and I are on the opposite sides of the fence with this issue. I say the man got what he deserved, religion or not. He says the only crime the man did was setting up close relatives together (which is against the bible). Yes, this is something that has to do with what a religion follows, but does the need to marry 14 year old girls off to men really fit that bill? Even if the law in that state says that "As long as it's consentual" there is one thing that really didn't set right with me: if they didn't do the deed, their souls were at risk for salvation. I belong to my husband's church where the pastor says he's a prophet. Some of the things he's spoken to us has really gotten me scared for my soul and my life. Some of the things he's said has made me want to go and down a 5th of Jack. If me being in my 30's feels this way, how can a girl at 14 say "no" to a man of his stature? Believe me, ift he man is a great speaker, he's convincing enough to have a man with very limited income give an extra large bill for the donation plate because it was preached to and a 14 year old girl to marry a man, it would be done. What's your thoughts on this?

Both polygamy and rape are against the law, so yes, I'd say the man got what he deserved. I also think it is manipulative for great speakers in the church to use their gift to control others by fear and coersion. Especially to twist the words of the Bible for the purpose of using others to do/get what they want.

Religion/Morality and law should be completely separate. believe it or not I am fine with Polyamy. I don't know about the 14 year old girl, that seems a little young and not quite mature enough to make up her own mind so I am not sure she would qualify as consenting.
