How do you explain death to a kid?

How could you define death to a kid? How to tell them in the manner that they would understand and that wouldn't bring to much sorrow? Would you even try to tell them about it or would you let them find its meaning on their own as they grow up?

It depends on how old they are, what they've been through, their home situation, etc. I would keep it simple and optimistic without being condescending.
