Have you ever been interested in visiting an Amish community? I know I have a strong feeling to visit the ones in Somerset County and Lancaster County Pennsylvania because I have strong family ties in these communities. I believe I still have family living in both of these communities and would like to visit them if possible. That would be neat. I know the way they live is mostly a lifestyle, but they have really strict religious beliefs. Any questions to others about how they live, their spiritual views or just general discussion is welcome. Thanks.

I have visited an Amish Community in Berlin, Ohio. This October we are going back (3rd year in a row). I really like it there. As far as their lifestyle, I pretty much know only the basics like what has been shown in documentries and such. I respect their way of life though I think it would be great not having to deal with regular social pressures, though I am sure deep down, they have their own.
I don't know if the family would accept you into their home for a visit or not. It's just my guess but I am assuming someone in your family left their community? And you are offspring or a decendent?
I have heard that when someone leaves the Amish way of life that they are shunned and not allowed back. So I'm assuming that my be the same for their decendents.
I wish you all the luck though if you decide to give it a try. And what I heard is an overall assumption of Amish. You can't base everything off of that as each person is still an individual and you may be surprised.
It never hurts to try. Good luck!!!

I wish there was some way to become penpals with a few Amish people lol. I send out letters through "snail mail" enough as it is, so a few more wouldn't be all that difficult. Yes, I think somebody in my family left the Amish community, and I believe I have a feeling who. My great great grandmother may have left when she married my grandfather. I'm sure she has been shunned by the rest of her family, and her descendants may've been shunned as well. I'm not sure if they keep documents for that sort of thing or not. If I did go for a visit, I might just stay in a local inn, but I need to figure out which town they live in first, since there are many Amish towns in one county. I know each individual has their own way of thinking when it comes to Englischers, but I think it is different for each Ordnung as well. Thanks for your reply.

I think they're interesting & I respect their way of life. But I wouldn't want to be an Amish woman -- I could never be submissive enough to be accepted by their community.
However... I think that the way they live is beautiful & it is very environmentally friendly.

Oh I know, the women usually have to be submissive to the husband. If the husband is kind and all, the wife may not mind being submissive. Sometimes, Mennonite husbands will help their wives in the kitchen, but I'm not too sure with the Amish men. The preacher's or bishop's wives especially have to be submissive.

most of time they will be curtious to you even if they are not accepting I live in an amish community. They are not a shut off as people make them out to be.
