Why not make a "real-life" Top Chef?

Ok, I admit I'm a Top Chef fan. I love the show and get some fun food ideas from the chefs. I know these chefs have trained and worked for this but it seems a little unlifelike to me. I mean, in real life, how many of us really eat the types of food they make on the show? Heck, I've sometimes not even heard of the ingredients and I like to cook. I think they need to make a more realistic show where the chefs have to do what the rest of us do in real life. I don't know about you but I have to plan menus for my family that will feed a family of five on a very limited budget. I have to take into account the personal preferences of each family member and I try to make them all happy and healthy. Even chili is a challenge because one member doesn't care for much meat, one hates beans and the kids can't eat anything too spicy. What do you think? Should they make a Top Chef type program that faces real life challenges?

How often do you dine at a 5-star restaurant? Because that's where you're going to get foie gras, caviar, geoduck, etc. While you can find some of these things to buy at specialty shops (and some caviar is available at the grocery store), these are fine dining ingredients. Top Chef is a fine dining competition. I do think that it would be interesting to have a similar show, in which a bunch of "home chefs" compete for something like a full scholarship to a culinary school. I'd send in an audition tape for that show.

I agree it would be a cool idea. Although they've made attempts to do that- going to an overweight camp and cooking for kids only! I'd be interested to see what they would do making meals for a family with various needs (likes, dislikes, allergies).
