I think my cat has dirty ears, i'm not sure though. He will shake his head sometimes like hes trying to get something out. Or when we pet him and we run our hands over his ears he shakes his head. How do I clean them out?

You can either purchase thease q-tips that have the shaft filled with a ear cleaning solution, or you can just use q-tips and some warm water like you would with your own ears if they were really dirty. It is also best to have someone hold the cat while you THOROUGHLY deep clean your cats ears. He may be mad at you for a bit but he will be much happier.

Libertarian PLEASE be careful with q-Tips!! Kitty ears have alot of curves inside. You wouldn't want to poke a hole somewhere it doesn't belong.

It sounds like he has earmites. You won't see them. They look just like the dirty yuck they leave in the ears. I used to take a vitamin E capsule and some olive oil to help my cats. I would poke a hole in the capsule and squeeze it into the oil I was going to use (put it in a small medicine cup or bowl). It is supposed to help with the irritation. I used a medicine dropper. After securing the cat in an old towel to prevent scratching, I got the oil in the dropper, squeezed it in the ear and rubbed the base of the ears together to work the oil down where it needed to be. Let the cat go and get his head-shaking out of his system. After about 5-10 minutes, take some cotton balls and clean around the smooth part of the inside of the ear. Don't stick anything down in the ear! You could rupture something! If this doesn't help after a few days, take him to the vet. He might have a problem the vet would need to deal with. Good luck! :)

Your cat might have ear mites, and you should really take him to the vet. However, you may be able to gently clean your cat's ears daily with cotton balls lightly moistened with mineral oil. Then gently massage the base of the ear to loosen any caked material. Ear drops and droppers are usually available from your vet. (I got this from a book called, The American Animal Hospital Association of Cat Health and Care).

Thank you i will also give this a try. I looked in his ear and it is dirty on the inside (very) he just showed up at my mother-in-laws house one day and they gave him to us. Will i see stuff crawling around if it was earmites.

It's very possible that the cat has an ear infection (from the dirt or other reasons). from my experience, when cats or dogs shake their ears a lot, it's usually an infection and needs to be treated with drops from the vet. Just know - these animals hate being probed in their ears! they are very sensitive! So beware of scratches and bites....Put some thick gloves on and...Good luck !
