I'd really like to learn how to swim since i was little but until now i don't know how. My brother, father and husband already tried teaching me how but i just can't do it. Maybe i have a phobia of drowning. I don't know how i can really learn how to swim. i think it's because i run out of breath very fast. well, maybe it's not for me. what do you think? when and how did you learn how to swim? is it just easy? Please give me some ideas. thanks!

Hi claire! Hmm.. so you easily run out of breath? Try to practice first the floating as in lying on top of the water with the coordination of your arms and legs. I guess that is the first step or the basic in learning how to swim. It's a nice feeling though that you can balance your weight. Then after that take the other strokes. Well, in my case, I knew how to swim when I almost got drowned. hahhaha That was in my high school years when one of my friends having his birthday at the beach. I thought the water was not that deep so I tried to go down stepping on the stone I seen down and suddenly "OOOOOppppps!" my feet slipped off!! I tried to stand yet the water was so deep. I calmed myself and let my mind helped my body balance my weight to go up on the water. At first I thought I can't make it, yet when my body followed the weight I had given, I can feel the lightness of weight on my body on the water and my body goes up!*smile* I managed to move my arms and legs then. So that was it. *smile* Since that incident I tried to practice more and more until I knew some of the strokes the swimmers had. Just try to practice more friend claire. It just a matter of mind over our body. Try it for yourself too I guess you'll probably enjoy it claire. Good luck :)

yeah claire, it was really difficult if we had been caught by our fear. We easily got panic and we could not think appropriately on what to do. Gosh! Anyways, you knew how to swim from below the water to up, so it was a good sign though. *smile*

hello, that's nice that you already know how to swim, the same thing happened to me more than once, but i always find how to get out of the deep water since i know how to swim below going back to the shallow water. i can't just swim and float at the same time so i can breathe. kinda hard when you don't know really how and your fear takes over at once cause it only takes seconds to drown in the water. thanks for the tips cristalkate! :)smiles

Hi Claire, You remind me of myself. I like to play in the water as long as I can touch bottom. I have never learned to swim. I have tried to learn. I tried with lots of different people, to no avail. I nearly drowned on 3 different occasions. Maybe fear of drowning is my problem. So, I have given up on learning how to swim. I just enjoy the water as long as I can touch bottom. Happy posting..

I too dont know how to swim. As much as I wanted to learn how to swim I always have this feeling that I would drown. Almost all the members of my family know how to swim. So, whenever my family and I goes swimming, I just stay near the steps.

If you get out of breath real fast, then i would almost say you have asthema, and i wouldnt say that just because you have this you cant go swimming at all, you should just be carefull about how much you do actually swim! And i see that you also say that your family has also tried to learn you to swim, but failed. Then there is one piece of advice i can give you. Go to youre local swimming baths and pay for lessons there, i mean it does cost, but you will get lessons with a profesional, and i can guarantee you that 90% of people who do have swimming lessons with pros often end up being able to swim! And this can be a real valuable life skill, just think if you was to get too far out to see and wasnt able to swim? You could probably die out there, so please take the swimming lessons, and go to the doctors to find out if you have asthema... and no i dont know how to spell asthema but i do hope you know what i mean... i hope my post has helped you!

Hi Claire! Before, I was also very much afraid to learn how to swim. It's kinda ironic because our house is only less than 2 miles away from the beach yet I don't know how to swim. Yes, I do love the water either pool or sea but everytime I go swimming I am only up to the place where I can still reach the ground because just like you I am hella scared of drowning. But when I came here in the US, my husband is very persuasive to teach me how to swim (he's a good swimmer). He taught me some techniques and I also tried my best to learn because hubby is sometimes fond of throwing me in the deep part of the pool when we are swimming. Now, the only thing that I need to work out is my speed. For me, it's really difficult at first but when you are determined to do it, I am sure you can. If you want you can also take some swimming lessons. Sometimes, we learned fast if we don't know our instructor and we pay for it...I guess you know what I mean...*smile* I am sure you can do it...Go girl!

we are the same, when we go swimming in the pool or ocean i don't go deep, just where i can still reach the ground with my feet, sometimes i tip toed already. hehehe. i know how to float and swim under but i don't know how i can swim above the water surface where i can breathe. i didn't take swimming lessons yet cause i think i'm a hopeless case cause my family and husband already tried to teach me how but they all failed. well, maybe it's not really for me. :) that's ok cause i don't just go deep when we go swimming.

Maybe it's because it's someone in your family who's teaching you. I had the same problem, I couldn't swim and my brothers and friends tried to teach me and couldn't. I learned how when I went to 4-H camp with someone that I didn't know at all. The instructor made it so easy to learn that I wasn't afraid anymore. I think you're panicing and hyperventalating is why you lose your breath so quickly. So try going to a club such as the YMCA and get an instructer there to teach you. Someone you don't know so you'll be open minded. It worked for me!

Don't feel bad, I live in Hawaii, and I am a poor swimmer, however it is easier to learn how to swim in the ocean, salt water is easier to swim in than a pool, usually your local YMCA have swimming classes for adults, we have them at the beach for adults, but just so many times a year. I was unsuccessful in the past to swim in the pool, I almost drowned. So I have a phobia about the water.

Try in shallow waters 1st wear u are able to stand on the floor of the pool.. Get started by using a float to help u in the water til u get the hang of kicking water.. Very soon, u be off the float and swimming gracefully in style;)

try swimming in shallow waters first. after you get comfortable with it then go deeper. increase it gradually. won't learn it overnight that's for sure but eventually you will.

Swimming is something our family loves to do. I had swimming lessons during summer when I was yet in elementary and one in highschool but both did not help. I learned how to swim when my cousins would paddle a small boat and jump-off when we reach further that is the water is deep and blue. It was thrilling and fun that I learned to swim in order to survive.

What a shameful on me, be pleased to inform you that I'm also don't know how to swim and never bother about that. But seem like I'm not alone in this world who don't know how to swim. Hopefully somebody here can provide me any web link that leads to swimming theory, I mean the tips of how to get it started.

I didn't find it too hard to learn... It was quite easy.. But u need quite a lot of stamina for it... U need to make urself fit before u strt swimming, otherwise u will get exhausted very fast.. As far as running out of breadth is concerned, u can master it quite quickly... U just need to practise holding ur breadth while under water without swimming.. It will also help in stamina building.. Rest u can go for a trainer, he will let u knw how to do it.. There's nothing to fret about.. After all, in the end, there is always a floor beneath u.. So, no need to worry... Good luck..

I never learned how to swim. My parents tried for years to get me to learn, but to no success. I have a very bad fear of water since I was younger and my father and brother nearly drowned in separate incidents. I love taking showers, and baths but I find it very hard to put my face under the water.

We are on the same boat. lol I laso like to swim. Everytime our family has an outing and were going to beaches, I envy my family members who knows how to swim. I have no formal lessons yet. But if given a chance, i would like to learn it. I like water and the relaxing effects it gives our body.
