Student(s) killed for Cellphone

This thing has been bothering me for so long that I am really going crazy because of this! On a regular basis, I read in our Daily Gleaner where students both males and females are being targetted by some adults for their cellphones. When the child refuses to hand it over the adults stabs or shoots them fatally. Now my questions are and I hope that I can get some good solid answers on this. Should students be allowed to carry cellphones to school? Parents what type of phone would you allow your child to take to school? Is it the name brands being targetted or just cheap everyday phone? It would be sad to know that cell phones are banned from schools but I would love for something to be implemented which will help secure the child's safety in all ways. Here in Jamaica the children are being killed for their cellphones and these phones are mostly bought with lunch money saved over an extended period. So what suggestions can you give in assisting us here in preserving our children's safety? Personally I think the cell phones allows them to be able to make contact with parents. These phones too are also used to make mischief in class. Boys use the cell phones to take pictures of female teachers by placing it under the desk and then sells these photos to others at a cost. This is a real live case and of course the student got expelled from school. This, along many others, are the negative aspects of how the cell phones are used in school but what about the positive? We have well meaning and respectful students who would never do these things yet they too have to suffer if a ban is placed on these phones? Can a common ground be found in all this? Why would a child have two cellphones in school? The attacker in today's paper refused the first phone the child gave to him and told him that it was the other one he wanted when the child refused he stabbed him and escaped! I know that the average Jamaican loved to show off so may be thats why he ahd both phones with him at school yeterday. So I say to us parents what steps can we take? Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Crime - Crime are increasing in a faster pace.
Hi Sharon! The incident makes me sad too.Crimes are increasing in a faster pace.I am of the opinion that cellphones should be banned in schools as some students use it for purposes otherthan just making important calls.Sometime back a student had circulated MMS of 2 students getting intimate which he recorded using his camera phone. Recently in India cellphones were banned in the schoolpremises in the city Bangalore which i think is a welcome step.

Hey Ann thanks for that because we are currently looking at this too. I wondered though if they wanted to go partial ban or total but I guess I would just have to wait and see what the bigger heads have in their minds onthis. Personally I agree with you that it should be banned from schools.

It's probably because those children are attracting those robbers of their possessions. I mean, if the robbers can't see anything to rob, then they'll definitely won't rob that person. But if they see something valuable to rob, especially those kids.. then there's a huge possibility of having their phones robbed.. It happened to some of my friends. They were showing off their gadgets and stuff.. And a few weeks after, they got robbed while walking in the street. The other things were stolen from them .. Also, parents can provide cellphones for their kids.. I suggest that they give their kids cheap phones which the child can still use for calling and texting.. Rather than those expensive phones which can definitely attract lots of people especially those robbers.

I believe that the cheaper the phones are are the more disgusted robbers are with it. I have a nokia and I leave it anywhere and no one wants it. Certain phones I just dont purchase for me as long as I am able to make and receive calls on it I am at home.
