Why do people drink and drive? It's not just celebs!

Lately you are hearing about so many celebs drinking and driving and we say why? don't they know better? But really many people are still doing it. I used to drink but never drive even if I had one drink. I thought you may have that accident anyways and if you had that one drink you would always wonder if that is what did it. My ex got caught drinking and driving three times (before he meet me) and lost his license for two years. He blamed it on the breathalyser and I said not that, YOU! He stopped doing it for years but started to push it again with one or two drinks. I know my boyfriend has done quick drives to grab something after having a drink, which I don't agree with. With what we know can happen why would you do it? Have you done it? Do you know someone who does?

Im 17 and I havent had my liscense for that long, a few months maybe. I remember driving my car to a party thn getting drunk and i thought to myself "can i honestly put myself behind that wheel" and I couldnt I dont know how ppl can even get back in that car and go behind the wheel after drinking. I cant see straight and I cant think straight, why would i even wanna get behind that wheel? I think some people really need to think more bout what risks they're putting themself into, its insane.

Why do ppl do it? Cause they are idiots! Have I ever done it? NOPE..in fact the whole reason I never originally got my license or a car etc was because I was a very heavy drinker and I KNEW I wouldnt have the sense enough to drive to work and not drink (especially since I worked in a bar and having drinks bought for me was standard)..OR I wouldnt have the sense to drive to work, drink and NOT drive home..So I just never bothered with a license....Now at 37 I'm just so used to NOT driving at all getting my license isnt soemthing I get headstrong about...I know I NEED to becaue it would make things easier for my husband and myself etc but I'm just so used to NOT driving its not like I miss it or anything ya know....I keep saying I'll go for my test but havent bothered yet LOL

I would have never got my license either if I didn't move to this rural community. Everything is far away. My sister who is in Orillia now at 33 never bothered with a license cause she was in T.O. and didn't have a need for one. Now she is thinking a little bit on it cause things a little bit harder to get to. You had a lot of sense knowing the situation you were in and knew it wasn't wise under the circumstances. Too bad these idiots are not as smart as us! Vicki

Oh yea if you're in the GTA anywhere everything is SO accesible! Even down in Niagara its really not that hard to get around, harder than in T.O or the surrounding areas mind you but still very doable....Where I am now here in NY I'm not within reach of anything anymore which I really do hate and getting my license would be a good idea at this point but I'm so use to NOT having it its just not a rush for me LOL thanks for best.res too btw :-D

When I passed my driving test I made a promise to myself that I would NEVER EVER drink and drive. Not a drop, nothing, nada. If I got out for an evening in the car then I will stick to soft drinks rather than take the slightest chance. Having seen the results of drink driving, an accident recently which killed a total of five people simply because the driver of one of the cars had been drinking all evening, I can honestly say NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE.

Hi vicki! People who drink are not just doint it, but because they are adicted to it that they can't just drive without drinking, which is think is not good for them, the society and the country. Adiction is a very serious thing which make people think what they are doing is right. Thanks

well i know a few people that have done this and now they are paying for it by their license taking away,to me i have never done this because i was always of getting caught and causing a severe accident and then i would feel guilty the rest of my life knowing what i did,and god forbid if i ever hurt someone while under the influence it would kill me.the celebs always get away sky free and i think its so wrong just because they are popular they should be treated just like if it was me or you.but ofcourse it will never come down to that because money talks with them and we dont have what they do so we will get the nitemare part of it.but it is very dangerous to do and i am not for it at all.pattie

I am feeling like you 3lilangels! My guilt would kill me if anything was to happen to someone. OH my goodness Ravenlady, that is so sad. He must have so much guilt in him and how the family would feel towards him for that. I am so sorry for all who had to go through this. It is truly a sensless thing to do. Thanks you all for great posts!

Well some of it is the subtraction of inhibition. But there is also the selfish nature of drivers. Some think its the 11th commandment and that people should be able to drive no matter the condition (or maybe not people, just the drunkard in question). Its very selfish and irresponsible but it happens. I haven't done it at all, no reason to. Plus I've seen the results of terrible driving.

This is a question of human nature. Some body up on this list totally missed the point of the question. Well, people do it, because first of all no body admits he or she is high when they are, I think the sixth sense takes control over the five senses and affected thinks the he or she is, in fact, more subtle in this state of mind. Secondly it is the question of doing the prohibited. It is in the nature of human mind to always explore and experience the taboos or barricaded grounds. The more something is covered, the more the people will inquire about it. I have known a person who drove when hung over and ran into a severe accident. Whats more, you don't get high single-handedly. In this state, you keep fighting for control over your bodily actions, mostly you keep it and when the moment of losing comes, bam, it happens.

People do it because they think they can get away with it. Oh the police will not get me sort of thing. I have had many discussions about this issue with my friends and they always say that, police wont catch me or I know a trick for the machine or I know when I am just under. Thats all fine but they never mention how many times someones life is in danger every time they do it. I dont drive and dont drink but my husband does both. He never drinks more than 2 drinks a day and as we leve near a check point (where the police have checks very often) he has never had a high reading it bearly even shows that he has had a drink. If he is planing to drink more we organise transport and he never drives.

I am sorry to hear about your uncle. It seems so many people have been impacted by a person's choice to drive drunk however there are still too many people out there doing this! Thanks so much for sharing your experince with me!
