Its nice to have some good biodiversity or semi-good biodiversity news every once in a while. 11 new species of plants and animals have been discovered in Vietnam. The species included a snake, two butterflies and five orchid varieties. These new species were discover in a remote region of Central Vietnam that is called the "Gree Corridor" in the Thua Thien Hue province. The new snake species, the white-lipped keelback, It has a yellow-white stripe along its head, red dots on its body and can grow to more than 30 inches long. The new butterfly species are among eight discovered in Thua Thien Hue since 1996. One is a "skipper," a butterfly that flies in a quick, darting motion. Three of the new orchid species are leafless, which is unusual for orchids. The other new plant species include one in the aspidistra family, which produces a black flower and can subsist in low light, and an arum, which produces yellow flowers surrounded by funnel-shaped leaves. The bad news is that all these species are under threat from illegal logging, hunting and development. Have we discovered new species just to watch them be destroyed? That is truly a great find!...Wow! Leafless Orchids, New Butterfly's and even a Snake! It's so disturbing to hear about all the Rain Forests being torn down, Logging, and Development (especially Development, and they say that's progress, right!) I hope they are tough little Species so they make it through this rough world of ours.....they'll probably make it longer than humans will at the rate we're going. Great news and a great posting. Thanks for the info!
