YOU decide a high school student's future - yes, YOU, you crazy MyLotter!

OK, so I've been thinking a lot about my future lately. Turning 18 years old in two weeks, I have every right to, no? There are two passions in which I want to pursue in the near-future; one 'thing' is education, as in teaching high school Spanish I, and the other is radio/television/newspaper/Internet/etc. See, my family has a background in teaching/schools/etc. and I have a huge interest in media in general. I've already gotten a head start in my media career: I am a radio DJ for a local college station (not those lame NPR classical-music stations....one that plays alternative rock/indie music, one that big ClearChannel stations have actually considered a competitor) and that's going great; I am the anchor for our high school's morning show (show= announcements, stupid segments and occasionally news stories when I GO out and do them); I'm a Staff Writer for the high school's newspaper and magazine... In addition, I'm starting some websites soon and starting to write for online publications...plus I'm debuting an actual "magazine" soon (yeah) So, all that is going super-awesome....BUT...I still have this side of me that wants to go into teaching...just something about shaping our crappy youth into something better that gives me satisfaction. :) Now, I'm already taking college classes for credit to get my Associates in Radio/TV Broadcasting at the college where I DJ at...I know for sure that I want to get that degree and possibly go further... But, if I want to teach as well....? I know I can do both, but college-wise... I was thinking about, in addition to pursuing a degree in Radio/TV Broadcasting, enrolling in one of those "alternative" colleges/online colleges, like University of Phoenix or DeVry and getting my Bachelors, and eventually Masters, in Education... that way I could do what I love doing, and also study to do something else that I love as well. Ideas? Good? Bad? Out with it!!

I think it sounds like you are on solid ground, both areas that you want to go into are great paths to take, you know media can teach every bit as much as in the class room if not more, the media influences the young in a strong way, and I must be honest I don't thing a little srong leading wouldn't go astray, if you are doing well in the media area I think you should definitely stick with it and teach acoss the airwaves, I think you will have more ears there...good luck to you.

thank you for that, actually my part-time co-host on my radio program was telling me that one would have a larger "classroom" via the airwaves in lieu of other methods (we were discussing my debate/unsureness as to whether to get a degree in radio/tv broadcasting or journalism - ultimately reaching that radio/tv does have a larger influence in the younger population, which is what I aim for) I would like to invent a class that deals with current events, news, media, etc. - an open daily discussion/opinions on events; also having students go out and find a story, report it, and go from there...

Maybe you could start on an internet radio station and have a class type show, start a new idea for learning while having fun...

I'm actually starting my own radio talk show soon - there is a site out there that is getting pretty big and lets you host your own show - LIVE - for free...and they promote it... basically the show will be political/current events/your regular AM talk radio station but geared towards a younger audience...
