Each family has their own style and variety in accepting guests, In Kerala a State in India we usually serve coconut water if available or lime juice or any other fresh fruit drinks. Then give some snacks or sweets at initial stage. During dinner we may give rice with sambar along with some side dishes and papadam too which is called sadya on banana leaf, in dinner also rice with combinations of various curries and other taste side dishes.Any thing to share on this please.

I depends on the time of day. Visitors in the morning are offered coffee. In the afternoon we offer tea. On special occassions we'll also have pastries for our guests. Otherwise we'll just offer them a cookie with their drink. I always put the tin open on the table and tell them to have as many as they want.

When we have guests at home, we begin with serving them some tea and some fruits if we happen to have some and also we serve them some watermelon seeds or sunflower seeds or some other snacks. For lunch and dinner, we buy some fresh vegetables and fish and some meat. Sometimes we also serve dumplings. It depends on the habit of each family so far as guests are concerned.

What you said is right, Shamrack. For the guest who comein for some time we give tea, coffee or any juice and some biscuits or snacks which we have at home. We will not get enough time to cook for them. Unless we know early that they are coming there will not be anything special. Whoever comes for lunch will get pot luck , that is what we have cooked for ourselves will be served to the guests too. Only if they are invited guests the food will be prepared as per their taste, if they are non veg the item will be prepared if the vegetarians then veg meal will be prepared. Nothing special otherwise.

WE serve tea or juice if the person is visiting for a short time or snack time. If they visit in the meal time we share with them what we have prepared. But if we have invited them over we make sure we make some non veg items atleast egg would be included in the meal.

We just offer drink and food, and sit down and have a long conversation.
