When in Rome?

Do you think the saying "When in Rome do as the Romans do" is a good saying to go by? Should you do everything a particular culture does when you are around them even if it compromises your own personal belief system? I think we should value all cultures but I don't neccessarily think that we should throw our own beliefs aside to assimilate ourselves within another culture.
