How Does This Make You Feel???

This quote is a favorite of mine. I want to know what others on the board think about it, or if I am just plain crazy to like it. Maybe it is because of the bipolar, but this quote just fits to a tee. "I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity." Edgar Allan Poe Don't be shy...say what you really think.

My father is bipolar and I would say that this quote suits him to a tee also. With the bipolar I honestly don't know which is worse, the ups or the downs. The ups become a challenge because he can go over the edge so quickly and have to be hospitalized, the downs are sad to watch because he literally is floored by it and can barely scrape up enough gumption to get out of bed in the morning. But right at the beginning of a manic period, it is so nice to see him engaged and interested and productive, and I know it feels better for him too. I imagine that this very feeling is why so many bipolars will stop their meds when they are high. It's a feeling you'd like to see continue. I like the quote and I'm glad you shared.

Hey, long time no chat. LOL. Write it down and if you ever change your sig line, maybe you will use it. Poe was certainly ahead of his time in his thought process. I wonder what he would think and say of the world now. Thanks.

Hi creative, It's good to see you! Been a while. I really like that quote, and I am bi-polar too. I always got so sick and tired of the word "normal". What exactly is normal? And who do they think they are to say that I'm not? Your Pal, PurpleTeddyBear ;)

Hey there PTB, I love your responses. As I said above, normal is a relative term in these days. You are so right: who has the right to say that you/I are not normal, and they are? Today, I don't think there is any "normalcy" in the world. I think my shrink is real whackjob, lol. Glad you are still my friend. Hugs.

hmmmmm, its nice and its valued, but you have to think also what you want to say, make it sure that you dont hurt anyone, and affect your personality. sometimes when there is a problem at my co worker, i realy want to say my openion.. but its happened that some are affected with it and hurt.so i try so hard to say it in a nice way.

Thanks for your response. It is only a quote, and not meant to hurt anyone's feelings. I agree that it is best when dealing with others, to try not to offend them, and think about what you say before you say it. Glad you shared.

Hey CDW, That's very interesting & probably accurate.I feel as if things are falling apart sometimes these days but when I think back to the days when I "thought" I could think clearly those decsions brought me to where I am today. +'s

I totally like this and it makes a lot of sense to me. I have BPD, so I can definitely relate. When a person is insane, they are completely free, they don't have a care in the world, because they live in their own little world. When you are sane, you are aware of reality and all of the problems that are going on around you. There is not much freedom in that. Now, my problem is that I am stuck in the middle. I am not sick enough to be considered insane, but I am not healthy enough to be considered sane. I do not want to be totally insane, but I would like to fit in somewhere. Regardless, to whether I am around "Normal" or "Crazy" people, I stick out like a sore thumb.

I hear you. I am kind of stuck in the middle as well right now. I don't know if there really is anything "normal" anymore. It is such a relative term these days. I like what you have to say about the freedom of being in the "other land". Thanks.

You are welcome mystic. Thanks for responding. It is nice to see that others feel the way I do about this quote. There are many "famous" people that are bp; most of them artists, writers, poets, or some other creative outlet. Poe however is one of the best known, because he took his life during a bout of severe depression. Sad, just think of the other wonderful works he could have produced. Bless you.

I love it. I never heard that before. Makes me think of what the shrink told me at 18. You think your insane therefore your sane. I have been using that one for years. Muhahahaha!

Well if someone asks me that question everytime i say something about my life or stuff i guess that'd be quite annoying. Haha. If i hear it 2 to three times maybe it's okay but much more than that i guess i'd be irritated and tell her/him. =)

My spin on Poe's verse is that when you're not mentally ill (i.e your brain is functioning properly) you begin to think about what's transpired while you were ill. I have shuddered more than once recalling the antics I pulled in the throes of mania!
