Anyone have experience in boarding their cat(s)?

I haven't traveled overseas in quite a while and miss the places I enjoyed visiting in countries such as England and France. I would still like to travel again, and am getting my passport renewed next week. However, I have no one that I trust to look after my three cats. It might be possible to leave the cats a week's supply of water and dry food, but I don't see how they would all survive on that for a week or more. So it looks like I might have to find accommodations for the cats. Does this sound like a good idea? Also, I'd appreciate hearing about any experiences that you might have had in finding suitable temporary places for your cat(s) while you are away from home. Thank you all in advance!!! :-)

This is quite a dilemna. I have had to face that situation myself with my two male cats. Have you tried to find a neighbor who would stop in a few times during the week. I did that once. There is a "pet nanny" in my area who comes every day when I am away. Check with the vets offices in your area, they might know of someone who will take care of your cat while you are away. Some vets actually accomodate cats while owners are away...

LOL iliana, you must have been reading my mind! The idea of asking my vet if she could accommodate my cats might be just the ticket! Next week sometime, I will stop in and ask her. By the way, she's got 9 cats of her own. I just wonder what she does about them if she has to be away from home. In any case, thank you so much! That may be just the ticket.

Hi. Well I have only ever done it once and would say never again. The place came highly recommended, and I went to visit it before we went away, but both my cats (this was 20 years ago, so not the ones I have now), came back with coughs and colds that they had picked up there. I am actually lucky - my best friend from school days loves cats, but can't have any in the apartment complex where she lives, - so whenever we go away, she comes and stays here, thus meaning my cats can stay in their own environment with someone they know and trust, and the house gets looked after too. I know there are good places out there - a work colleague of mine left hers in one quite recently when she had to go into Hospital for a week, and they were fine. It's just a matter of shopping around. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads-up on some of those boarding places, Rosie. Actually, I would prefer someone to come in and at least change the cats' water and open some canned food for them, but things probably will not work out that way. I don't know. I so look forward to traveling again soon and am glad that I started thinking about these matters early on. Right now, I've got some shopping to do! Thank you for replying, Rosie.

I, myself, wouldn't board my cats however there are people who have. I'd be afraid they'd run away once I got them home again or be so traumatized that they'd never be themselves again but that's my fears and don't know if they're real or not. For what I know, the cages are small and the cats can't get any exercise that they need. However, have you ever thought about pet sitters? There may be some in your phone book but it may be wise to get some references before deciding if that's the route you want to take. That way your cats will have the luxury of being at home where they know where they are and feel comfortable most.

Hmmm...that sounds like a possibility! I could ask around. I know that my sister boards her two large dogs with no problem with a trustworthy place near her home. And she has one or two trusted friends stopping by and caring for her cat. And when my sister had her floors redone, she sent her cat to live with me for about a week. Her cat was fine and got so comfortable that she terrorized my cats by scaring them away from my bed, lol. Anyway, thanks for mentioning the pet-sitter option. It's something to consider.
