Patriotism in a lapel pin?

This borders on silly to me. With all the important issues facing the politicians why are the press so interested in Barack Obama's flag pin? Some say it is a symbol of patriotism or rememberance of 9/11. Now there is a big to do because he decided not to wear it. Doesn't matter that some of the other candidates aren't wearing one either. The press persued the question of why and did not like is answer. Don't we have more important things to talk about?
