I do not believe it, kids letting off fireworks in the street, it's only October

Furious - Just how annoyed can you get
October 5, 2007 3:30pm CST
It is the 5th October, a whole four weeks away from Guy Fawkes Night on the 5th November. Already the shops are selling fireworks to the kids, and for the past hour a bunch of brats has been letting off fireworks out in the street. I know who these kids are and I know exactly where they bought the fireworks. The same shop that is constantly being prosecuted for selling booze and cigarettes to underage kids, and now the fireworks are again being sold to kids. Last year I, together with several neighbours, reported the shop but apart from a fine, the shop continues to sell to the kids. They are driving us nuts tonight, with all the noise and nuisance, Moomin is hiding under the sofa - he hates fireworks. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching properly organised firework displays at the appropriate time, but this is getting beyond a joke with rockets hitting the roof of the house and it looks like they are deliberately aiming some of these fireworks at the buses on our road too. Am I turning into an *old codger* or do you think it is right for these kids to be throwing fireworks around in the street.

Hi Hun, No, I don't think that you are turning into an "old codger" at all. The store owner shouldn't be selling the fireworks to those kids, and they shouldn't be firing them just anywhere. Fireworks are meant to be in the sky not aimed at vehicles, houses, and other people. Fireworks can be very dangerous! I enjoy fireworks yes, but I always leave it to professionals to do at an organized event or holiday! Poor Moomin! Have a good weekend! Love & Hugzz, Your Friend, PurpleTeddyBear!

Thanks my friend, I know I must come across as an old codger with this subject byut I am truly worried about the potential injuries both to the kids and the motorists on the road. I love watching firework displays too, I just wish the authorities would tighten up on the people selling the fireworks, and the parents would keep a tighter rein on their kids. Moomin has spent most of the weekend inside during the evenings now, I just hope other pets are not being too distressed by the constant barrage of explosions.

I can understand that you are just concerned hun, I would be too! Atleast with Moomin inside you know your cat is safe! Hopefully no other animals in the neighbourhood have had an "accident" with the fireworks! Have a good weekend hun! Love & Hugzz, Your Friend, PurpleTeddyBear.

It's not Guy Fox Day, and they are already setting off fireworks...? Where are the parents?

Yup, fireworks are already being sold and bought by children. I sometimes wonder if the parents actually care what their kids are doing, the kids certainly seem to have plenty of money to buy the fireworks and the shop owners are quite happy to take that money and sell to underage kids.

How could we expect the kids to be any different from the adults who fill the stores and media with Thanksgiving and Christmas adverts and decoration way earlier than four weeks before the celebration is near.

Very true hun, but the stores are not supposed to be selling fireworks yet, and those that are seem to have a blatent disregard for the law and sell fireworks to kids as young as 10 years old. Two shops near me have already been reported, so they pay the pitiful fine and carry on selling to children. It's madness.

It's definitely bad for them to be letting them off in the street. Fireworks, while pretty, are dangerous. And if you're an old codger then so am I, and I'm only a teenager! Kids here get ahold of fireworks fairly frequently as well...and it's illegal to set them off here without a liscence...and being underaged adds insult to injury. But no one's ever arrested for it. When we first moved here, we were afraid that they'd hit our house and burn it down...but so far, nothing's burned down..or house or not...so we're less worried, but it's still a concern. I'm waiting for one of the kids to blow a hand off, honestly.

Yup, no one ever seems to be caught do they. I'm also waiting for one of them to get seriously injured then maybe something might actually be doen about it, but I'm not holding my breathe.

If they were launching them properly I'd have no problem. But if they are throwing them at each other or at property with intent of harm/destruction then yes its wrong. You aren't getting to be an old codger Recycledgoth.

Some of these idiots seem to deliberately throw fireworks at the cars on the road, I am just waiting for an accident to happen, and then maybe the police will take it more seriously too.

people can easily get hurt by misusing fireworks. You can get burns, hearing damage, even explosions that can severly damage your body. It's not safe for kids to be using them, or to use them in crowded areas where you can hurt someone else. I may be an old codger, but I think fireworks are pretty stupid. besides, I live in an area that can easily spark wild fires, so fire works are illegal where I live for good reason.

Well, we don't have Guy Fawkes Day, obviously, but we do have a lot of other days that they set off fireworks. Here they can't sell them inside the city limits. But the adults are as bad as the kids about setting them off! We have them on New Years, Independence Day, Mexican Independence Day, Chinese New Years and it seems for days before & after all these. I sure could do without them.

Right now we could definitely do without them. I don't mind fireworks when they are controlled or for special occasions, but it's crazy to see these kids buying fireworks this early on and letting them off in the street.

Responding to your question, It is totally insane for kids to start throwing fireworks by this time. You can imagine a scenairo which occured three days ago in my friends street, Some kids threw fireworks and everybody in the street took to their heels cos they all taught it was robbers, or some sort of war, Its totally insane, It wasnt funny when the kids had to be seriously dealth with. I dont support it.. Never

I agree, it is totally nuts but they still do it. I get really mad at the shops for selling them this early on, and even more angry when the shop owners sell them to kids knowing they are underage.
