What is the greatest danger facing the world today?

To say that the world has changed in the last fifty years would, I'm Sure you'll agree, be an understatement. We are now a global village, in fact we are neighbours. This would not be a bad thing, if we had learned to be good neighbours, which obviously, we have not. Herein I believe lies our greatest danger. Technologically, we have advanced beyond the wildest dreams of our forefathers, sadly, our social skills have not kept up. We are now within arm's length, so to speak, of people who's language, we do not understand, who's culture we know next to nothing about, who's religion, we've been told is wrong, and who we do not trust. Add to this the fact that half the people don't have the basic necessities of life, 40% have most of their needs met, while the remaining 10% have more than all the others combined. Rather then wanting to share, the richest are continually looking to get an even bigger piece of the pie. In my mind what we have here is a recipe for disaster. If our children are going to have a planet on which to live, someone must work fast. A lot of our world leaders can't see beyond their own little agenda, which usually has more to do with staying in power, then solving the world's problems. Any student of history knows what happens at such times, and the only difference between today and 500 years ago, or 1000 years ago, is that we now have the capability to send humanity the way of the dinosaur. Even after saying all of this, I still believe that it may not be too late. It's true that we don't have much time, but some people are beginning to see, that the stakes are too high, to just let things continue as they are. There may yet be time to build a better world. Blessings.

Well I know my views will probably be unpopular with many here - but my own opinion is that the greatest danger facing the world today is intolerance and bigotry - mostly caused by "religion". On one side you have the Christians looking down on Muslims for their lifestyles and beliefs (their attitude to women for example - you see discussions like that here all the time), and then on the other you see Muslims attacking the mainly Christian Western world for being too "decadent" and giving women too much freedom. And in between all the others religions - most of who seem to spend their lives tearing each other apart and arguing about whose "god" and age old scriptural writing is "right" - be it Jew v Arab, the Shi-ite Muslims v the Sunni ones, - and the Sikhs or Hindus against whoever. They are all as bad as one another, and most wars are caused by their conflicting beliefs - this causing poverty, heartbreak, famine etc. Why on earth can't people forget all this dogma, and fairy tale (sorry - that is how I feel about religion), and just remember we are all human beings? We all come into the world the same way and we will all leave it the same way. Start treating each other with respect and decency - regardless of colour/religion/creed/nationality/sexuality etc. Stop attacking gay people because someone's "God" (whoever he is) says its "unnantural" - stop the ridiculous caste system in India, stop this stupid idea that women must "obey" their men - just care for each other as Humanity. I thik that would go a long way towards maing the world a far better place, wgere we could all support each other, work together, help each other, without some man-mande dogma getting inbetween people.

Hi rosie, Well, your ideas are not unpopular with me, as I agree with most, if not all of it. It really isn't much different from what I said in my post, just said in a different way. I don't agree with this business of a 'right' and 'wrong' religion, and agree that it is still the cause of a lot of our problems. Your suggestions about solving the problems are also right on. Blessings friend.

The greatest danger which world is facing nowadays is corruption. This is one thing which leads to all the problems later. It makes difficult for all of us to understand each other and most of it we dont know whom to trust and till when can we trust that person.

I tend to agree with you, there just may be time to make things better. The bad thing is there are so many who don't think we NEED to do anything, they think everything's just hunky-dory the way it is. Fortunately, most of our young people are among those that know things have to change or there may be no future for any of us. I remember many years ago, during the weapons race and the cold war, someone said something to the effect of that the world can only be destroyed ONCE so why do we think we need to have enough weapons to destroy it several times over. I forget who said it but the thought, if not the exact quote, as stuck with me. This world could be such a beautiful, wonderful place, more than ever now when, as you say we're all neighbors more or less. How nice it could be if we could appreciate and respect each other's differences and accentuate the things we all have in common, the fact that we're all human beings who love our children and want the best for them. Why not learn from each other and share instead of fighting and hating each other for no reason other than that we're "different" ? OK, it's just Annie having another crazy dream... Great discussion!

Is very hard to solve all the problems in the world ,but if each of us would do something the world can become much better. Winston Churchill believed in sharing our blessings with the less fortunate. " We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give"

What constitutes the greatest perils of modern life to me are: lawyers, politicians, and our inability to make up our own minds. Justice and common sense are being twisted beyond recognition, we only have choices between one liar and another, and we are being convinced that black and white are really gray, and that nothing we do makes a difference. We are letting cruelty pass for strength, and 'celebrity' take the place of true talent. We are giving it away.

Hi alamode, Thanks for responding. We need people in power who see what's really happening, and are willing to do something about it. Common sense has to prevail. Blessings.

You have put this so well Pose123 and I agree with all what you say. We are becoming more segregated than uniting together as a human race instead of staying apart due to language, religion and race. I live in London and see this all the time. They go on about being a multi-cultural society, but we have to fit into certain boxes to get things that should be there for all as a community and not down to our race or religion. Sadly though, if more people do not unite and fight against what our governments are doing and what the corporate world is getting away with, things will only get worse. Its all part of the New World Order and we have to unite and fight against this evil.

While I feel all that you say here is very true there is one thing we often do not come to understand. All of the advances that we have come to believe are such, are technical. We as a human race have not advanced much at all in how we interact with each other. The technology has only done two things. Helped us live longer and made it easier to kill each other. Instead of throwing stones or arrows or clubs we now have a huge variety of weapons and constantly looking for more. Even if we don't kill ourselves off we must realize that this mother earth is only capable of sustaining life as we know it for only a brief period of time. The resources are finite and will come to an end. It is only a question of what generation experiences it. Gas prices are higher than ever before but nowhere can you try driving down a freeway in your small gas efficient car and not feel you are in the land of giants. Trucks and SUV's everywhere. I do indeed hope you are right. It will take changing our perspective on life and I fear the only way that will happen is a major catastrophe.

The greatest danger is that many have stopped believing in God and are making up their own rules about what is right and what is wrong. Also man has always been inclined to do evil, and without a proper morality as to what is right and wrong, they tend to do what they consider what is right even though it conflicts with some other's ideals. Being good neighbors is fine, if you do not do things to placate them that might be immoral or wrong. We have enough food and clothes for everybody, it is just that with borders and tariffs, often those that are without do not get the goods, and those without are often that way because through ignorance, they decide that, for example, women get the least vitamin laden vegetables, that children dictate to their parents, etc. If you solve these, and do not think that you are right and that God is wrong, many problems will be solved.

i agree. ironically, the more advanced technology has become, the more backward a lot of us has consequently become as well. for instance, we still have a lot to work on on how we communicate. and instead of making the world a safer place, people have become more paranoid. morality has now become a blur. i think that everything's just too fast that a lot of us just could not cope up. and not too many care about humanity anymore. it's really so sad.
