When you run out of food do you have an alternative until you buy it?

I'm great for running out of milk! Knowing this I always keep a can of evaporated milk on hand. Since I'm a coffee addict and drink tea with milk also the canned milk always comes in handy until I get my milk. The only problem I have with that is that I won't use in my cereal. I'm sure it's good but I just can't make myself do it. My mother always keeps egg substitute on hand in case she runs out of eggs. Of course she has to keep it in the freezer.
Do you keep an alternative food around for when you run out of something? Does it do the trick or would you rather not use it and run out to the store for what you need?

Hi Ctrymuziklvr, and no I never do use substitutes for milk or eggs etc, and we buy whatever we need once weekly and is always plenty at all times.

Yes, ctry, I do keep powdered milk on hand because I don't use milk often. There are certain recipes that require milk, so I just use powdered milk instead of the fresh. If I purchased fresh milk it would just end up going to waste in my house. I used to keep the powdered eggs also, but they are not so easy to find now. I like to keep lots of saltines on hand too. They go with so many things, and I often use them rather than bread.

Wow, that's intelligent. I wish I could say I did that. =p
Instead I always just have to go out to get things when I run out. I have given my son rice milk when we were out of milk, but we only had that around because I was supposed to be off dairy. So it wasn't any kind of forethought or planning.
I should start being better about that sort of thing, and keeping substitutes on hand. Instead, I usually just eat something else if I'm out of whatever it is I'm out of.

I don't cook but I do bake and I use the true item. But there are about three supermarkets that I can get to by bus from my house so I can just go to the store.

No alternatives don't work for me. I have gotten into the habit of once I know I have opened something, for instance my coffee, I will go buy another unopened one to keep in its place.
With milk it is a little harder, I just go out and buy it when I realize it is gone.

I do exactly that. I keep a can or two of evaporated milk in the cupboard as well. Not for the days that I run out of milk but for the days that I am too lazy to go to the store to get more milk of which I just ran out. I am the same as you I won't have it in my ceral I would rather have toast or ceral that doesn't need milk or something. Mind you I was raised on having canned evaporated milk in absolutely everything. Cereals, drinking with a dab of vanilla and teaspoon of sugar, in cooking such as macaroni and cheese, soups and etc. I tried it in my cereal a few months ago and thought oh my goodness how in the world did I ever think this tasted good. I threw it out pretty quick. Powdered milk is another thing I was raised on and good not have it in my house for the longest time. But I have noticed a few recipes call for it so I do keep a small pouch on hand sometimes.

I am the same way with milk. I try to always keep evaporated milk and milk powder in the cabinet just for this purpose. I am also forever running out of butter, so I always save the butter packets that you get with certain take out food, and taco sauce, ketchup, salt and pepper. They always come in handy just when I need them. I have also used liquid fabric softener on my hair when I was out of shampoo, it worked!

Hi ctry,
Powdered milk prepared and chilled is not half bad. Canned milk is ok. I drink rice milk, so if I run out, that is no big deal. I keep milk in the house for my grandchildren and if they run out, they will drink rice milk which I keep on the shelf.
I also keep egg substitute on hand and use it in my baking. Regular eggs are used for breakfast, salads, meringue and so on.
Happy posting..

I don't like to use substitutes. I try to make sure I buy more of something before I have totally run out of it. When there are less than six eggs left, I buy more. When there's about a fourth of a gallon of milk, I buy more. When there's half a loaf of bread, I buy more. I hate to ever run out of anything, ever. :)

Hi. For me, I can't do anything else but get it!! Haha. I mean I am quite hooked to coffee. So when time I was studying and I am running out of coffee, I will straight away go and shop for it, nothing but shop for it IMMEDIATELY. Haha. I don't use to keep any alternative food as every food mean different to me, haha, they never be the same.
