Gmail and Spam

I just responded to a discussion about Gmail and spam and I have a trick that I thought I'd share with those who have a Gmail account and get lots of spam. I don't know if it works with other email accounts, but I know it works with Gmail. If you're like me and you sign up for a LOOOT of different programs, websites, newsletters, etc..you get tons of spam. I get hundreds a day that end up in my spam folder. if you want to know who it is that is causing you to get the spam, so you know who is selling your email address and causing the most of it.. you just do this. When you sign up for something and put in your email address, add a + sign between your name and the @ sign and after the + sign type in the name of the site or program or whatever. Gmail will ignore everything after the + sign and sned the mail normally, but when you get email from that company or anyone they sold your name to, their name will be there, so you'll know where it came from. For example.. if you were signing up for an account on Mylot..you would type your email ID ex: Suze05+Mylot@gmail.com. Then when you get an email in your inbox that has that address listed as your email address, you will know that Mylot sold your info. Neat trick, huh! :O)

It sounds like a good idea, but would not you get a notice that you typed it in illegally? And what if the plus is a part of your name like you are Soand+thebigbuy at gmail dot com? And if they ignore after the plus, would that not mean they also ignore the @ and the name of the email provider as well? I do not get that much spam, and it goes through my spam folder. In fact, stuff I would rather not have as spam winds there as well.
