What Makes Some People Greedy?

The book I am currently reading put this question in my mind: What causes some people to become so greedy? Over the years I have seen people who exhibited greed for one thing or another. With some it's money, food, clothes, and on and on. Personally, I do not understand why people act this way. I have always been of the opinion that if you have what is necessary to sustain you in a comfortable manner there is no reason to keep wanting more and more. I know that many of you might disagree with me on this, but I just had to put the question out there. Growing up I knew certain kids(usually from very large families), who could never seem to get enough food to eat. Even after they were grown up and food was plentiful, they continued with the same greedy practices. I suppose that anyone who has felt deprived would be somewhat greedy at the time, but once things are normal they should get rid of the bad habit of greed.

well if u ask me, i think to some extent everyone is greedy. by that i mean there is something in this world that would make everyone crazy. greed to me is just human nature and if u just get a taste of whatever makes u greedy then u will want more. from what u said with the food could be a very good example. in that case it assuaged their hunger to be greedy. so they have gotten used to it and need it. to go back is and can be difficult. so yea, i understand that most people are greedy because i sincerely think that theres just no way to avoid it.

I don't think what you are saying is true at all, resuab, because I know lots of people who are not greedy in any way. It is very easy to spot the greedy ones because they never have enough. Generally, people who are greedy about one thing are most often greedy about everything. Most intelligent people realize that moderation in all things is the answer.

I've never been one to be greedy about anything but have a younger sister who's middle name should be greedy! She's on eof those people who the more she has the more she wants! She married a man who was well off and has taken advantage of that for years. She can never get enough of whatever she wants. I can't see the point if you already have what you need and in excess even why do you want more? It beats me.

I know people like this too, ctry. I have a friend who is so obsessed with having "things" that she just continues to stockpile everything you can imagine. When her house gets too overcrowded she will get rid of a few things for a short time only to accumulate more in their place. It is truly mind-boggling!

Greed is caused by the failure to be thankful for what you already have. Also it is the result of the belief that having things creates happiness. So when a person depends on things to provide them with feelings of joy, they soon find out that those feelings are short lived. Then they feel like they need something more to make them happy. And on and on it goes since the next big thing fails to keep them happy and satified. This leads to becoming greedy. The solution is to realize that in the present moment you already have everything you need and when you are thankful for what you have RIGHT NOW, you open up the possibility of receiving more. You have the choice to be happy with what you have right in front of you. Greed is also a form of fear in that the greedy believe that there is only so much to go around and that they better get their fair share before someone else gets it. This is the biggest crock of nonsense out there. The universe is plentiful and there is more than enough for everybody. This fear is unfounded and will create desperation for those that keep it within themselves. The world and the universe is an abundant place, with riches of all kinds for all! Fear and greed are states of the mind, not realities.

You said it all very well, sigma, but I still think it would be impossible to convince a child from a large family where there never seems to be enough food to go around to be thankful for what they have. I suspect that someone brought up in this situation might never feel secure.

I do. As an African American woman, when you don't have much, and opportunity comes for you to get a little something, greed comes in. Big example, Ivan and Katrina. If you make it through a storm here, more than likely, you'll be compensated for it. After Ivan, I got some extra food stamps, and it was good. But Katrina, oh man, folks lost their minds. The Red Cross was giving away money, FEMA was on it's bandwagon. I got from the Red Cross, I got the food stamps, and because both of my kids were in Gulfport, MS with their father, I should have gotten the FEMA compensation, but he beat me to it, and they told me that they couldn't duplicate a check. Not that it was right, although he had damages and suffered, he sent the kids to me after the hurricane. I have seen folks get that check, and others that didn't. Man, do I have examples.

i totally agree with you, why people are obsessed with money, its like take take take.ifeel much better giving.its like i need the latest mobile, latest tv, just to keep up with the jones.money must seem like a symbol of being successfull in life, me i just want to live my life being happy.i was made redundant, and all my friends would say was, well you can buy a new car now,no!i went to cyprus, spent it nearly all being in a country i love, living everyday life. i am running my own business, and making lots of money has no interest in me, just happy to be living in the country i love, and loving waking up to the glorious sunshine

Im not sure what makes people greedy but maybe its that people who dont have much growing up want it all or maybe its just some gene that we inherit from some family members.

All i could say is sometimes i do find myself in a greed situation. Like i know there are some opportunities that common sense wise would tell you to keep out or stay away, but your own greed factor will tell you to go for it. I know i've learned my lessons from this situation, never trust such offers. but i guess i have to admit, sometimes greed clouds our better judgement. And i've seen some people, as in well to do people, fight for food during buffet lines and grab whatever food they may not thinking of the other people in line also waiting for their turn. I guess media do play a factor on playing with people's greed. Always wanting people to have more than to be content and satisfied with what we have.

People become greedy when they fail to think about anyone but themselves. IF they stopped and looked at how some people live in this world, they wouldnt be so concerned with wealth. There are people who have no food, no shelter, no clothing, no nothing! and yet some people think they should have it all. I have a roof on my head, clothes on my back, and food in my belly but I am far far far from doing well money wise and that doesnt bother me. Im surviving and I feel a lot luckier than some people out there!
