Job 37:5 God's voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. 6 He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, 'Be a mighty downpour.' 7 So that all men he has made may know his work, he stops every man from his labor When things aren’t going well in my life, I love to read the book of Job. I think because it always reminds me that things could always be a lot worse. The last month has been some of those times. I’ve felt tired, frustrated, angry and sometimes even felt like giving up. It wasn’t surprising that I found myself reading the passages where Elihu is talking to Job. We don’t know much about him. I did find where he was a Levite (Priest tribe) and the passages seem to infer that he was younger than Job. He tells Job at one point that “even though I am young, I still have wisdom so listen to me.” In today’s language, Elihu might have told to Job… “Stop complaining and get a life.” But the three verses above are what really caught my attention. In the southern United States, when we get the occasional snowfall, what usually happens? Everyone rushes to the store and buys enough milk, eggs and sugar to feed a small army. We grab bananas out of the hands of toddlers and fight with the little old lady over the last loaf of bread. Do not laugh…I’ve seen it happen! Thunderstorms bring most outside work and play to a halt. Baseball players put up their metal bats and parents hurry to get off the metal bleachers. Golfers get away from trees. Highway workers head for the nearest building. Most of us could get by with going 5-10 miles over the speed limit because Mr. Sheriff’s Deputy probably isn’t going to stop you and stand in the driving rain to write you a ticket. But do we take that time to be quiet and see God in the beauty of it all? The next time God sends snow your way, think about what kind of a God we serve that could make immeasurable flakes, and no two will ever be exactly alike. When lightening streaks across the sky and thunder rolls through the clouds, stop and say a prayer of thanksgiving that you can see and hear what is going on around you. Just be still….and know that He is God.

I think what people forget is that God helped Job THROUGH the storm - He did not prevent the storm from happening. I think that is what a lot of people miss - not just in this story but many others. Not just for people who do read the Bible but people who are trying to prove that its hogwash because when they pray all the problems in the world don't just poof and go away.

This is so true! One of my favorite songs is "Praise you in this storm" from Casting Crowns. For those who haven't heard it, it talks about how I'm going to praise God in the storm and I will lift my voice, no matter where I am. It's very convicting, as I have a tendancy to want to blame someone when things aren't going my way.

You are exactly right, houndsgood. That is what people forget, even sometimes Christians. And when it was over, God blessed Job even more than He had before.

But why do we forget that every time that we go through the fire? We know that God is going to bring us out on the other side, but we continue to fuss and gripe about it anyway!

I was talking to my parents about Job the other day. He had it bad, but at least he had a good view!

I know what you mean. Why can't we remember to have that same attitude when things go wrong in our lives? I just want to lay down and cry and give up. I'd have made a good wife for Job...during the time she was trying to get him to "curse God and die". I feel like doing that sometimes.

It is blowing up a thunderstorm here. The building seems quiet and still as it always does when the weather is nasty outside. But I can hear the thunder, I can see the lightening and I can feel the breeze on my skin. What a joyous day it is! God has blessed me with hearing, sight and touch.

Amen, I had it so bad a couple years ago that I actually read Job all the way through 3 times in one day. I don't always read it as 'others have it worse than me' though - often I read Job as a reminder of how I should be - it was Job's faith in God and God's love for him that got him through all the trials and tribulations of life and sometimes I need to remind myself. On a lighter note I can't tell you how many times during my life people have picked on me about my name with 'keep the faith' - now as a Christian I am thankful for those reminders 'faith'.

3 times in one day? Wow, that sounds like a day that I'd want to forget lol... I know what you mean though. We should have a better attitude. God promises us that he will never leave us or forsake us. We, as Christians, seem to forget that when the chips are down.

Oh yes, those were some really bad times - I've read Job so many times if I had half a brain I would have memorized by now :) I think remembering that important feature about a relationship with Christ is something that is learned with time and experience. My best friends are a retired pastor and his wife and they never seem to forget that God is always there for us - if He lets us get into that situation He will help us through it. Which brings us to another of my favorite topics of which I am trying to remember - His answers are not always what we think or expect from Him, setting back and listening, figuring out what it is He wants us to learn from a situation are just as or even more important than the situation or solution itself.

I always try to remind myself that if I'm always on the mountain top that I would cease to appreciate it, would forget to rely on God and would never remember to stop and say thank you. He gives us the valley's so that we will appreciate the mountaintops.
