Your Bed: Headboard or No Headboard?

The bed that I sleep in currently has no headboard because I got rid of it a couple of years ago. Now, I have always preferred a headboard, and my reason for getting rid of mine escapes me. I used to really like the bookcase headboards because they offer lots of room to store the many items that I need to have close at hand. My last headboard, however was wicker and wrought iron-in keeping with my bedroom decor. Does your bed have a headboard or not? Which do you prefer? I am seriously thinking of buying a new headboard soon.

My headboard is very small, but I added a shelf like thing that fits right on top of it...I like it this way as I have a lot of my knick knacks on it, like candles, figurines, but I'm dying to get a new bedframe sometime...mine is 46 years old..yeesh...there's a nice bedframe at this store nearby that I have my eye on and has a regular hutch type thing..could store books, and larger thing in it.. but one problem..it also has storage drawers underneath...except they are on the wrong side...LOL...I would need them on the left side rather than right.

I really like the idea of a shelf, pyewacket. I have thought of doing something like that myself. Your bed frame must be a very solid one since it has withstood the test of time so well. I like old things because they usually have a lot of character. The storage drawers sound nice-even on the wrong side, lol.

The one big problem with the storage drawers being on the wrong side it would be smack up against the wall, so I couldn't use them...and I think my one kitty Kissy would be annoyed as there would be no space under the bed, and she loves going under my present bed..

You're discussion actually inspired me...someday I hope to get a new bed..since my room is so small it would have to be a twin size..so I started looking up sites that sell bedframes...holy moly, number one..I didn't realize they were so expensive and two, it's darn hard to find twin sized bedframes..the closet to what I saw and liked were what they call captain's beds, and they're usually the ones with the shelf like headboards and storage drawers underneath..I just know though if I ever do get one, my one cat will be annoyed...she likes going under my bed..she won't be able to if I get one of those captains beds!

I don't have a head board and I like it that way!!! It gives much more neat and clean and empty look..! Earlier we used to have a headboard. Becasue of that my bed used to look like so occupied and so not like a bed..!! It used to get all covered up with dust and even those things also whose place are not in a bedroom use to cover up my bed!! In your house having space with you means having loads of things too to cover whole of the place. When we had that headboard in our room it was always covered up with things..!! Thats is why I got rid of it. Now with no headboard on my bed my room looks so tidy!! I love it this way. And I am not even a reader so I don't even have to keep any books beside me bed!! :)

There are positives and negatives to using a headboard, stella. I don't like dusting, and found it tedious because mine would collect dust and had to be dusted frequently.

Nope no head board. My husband and I move a lot so until we settle down in one place, the less furniture we will have to move the better. Plus this way we won't risk damaging during the move.

That's a very wise choice, nmw. I have moved many times over the years and the less you have to move, the better.

I do not have a bed with headboard. I do not like it much either, hadn't have any as of now. I kind of dislike the whole idea of cleaning unwanted stuff now and then especialy when you have lot of cleaning to do otherwise. smiles..

We are on the same page there, mimpi! The more stuff you have, the more there is to clean. Nobody really wants more work, lol.

Since my bed is up against the wall, I really don't see the need for a headboard. But my husband is determined to get one, so we may have a new one here sometime in the future. I like them but I don't, when we had one on our bed, it seemed to make the room smaller. And for the moment we have limited space.

My bed is the same size. My husband told me the other day that we'd just need to get a smaller bed, he's a determined little cuss when he wants something, but this girlie isn't having it. We had a smaller bed once, and half the time I would end up on the floor cause my husband likes to move around to much and would inevitably push me out of bed. It don't happen as much with the queen sized bed. So he's just gonna have to wait for his headboard..lol and until we are able to get all our unwanted boxed up stuff to the salvation army. Nothing like having a storage room for a bedroom..lol!

I do believe that is the reason I decided to get rid of mine, jeweled, a shortage of space. My apartment is very small also. I have evn considered getting a smaller bed, but it would be difficult to part with my queen size one.

I don't have a headboard on my bed. The thing is about ten years old and I bought it cause it was the cheapest new bed I could find. I think the ones with headboards are more fancy or rather look more complete then my bed. But some nice bedding can make them look good without them. They aren't really needed for anything other than looks so I don't really care that I don't have one. Vicki

I agree, vicki. You do not need a headboard to sleep in comfort. It is the bedding that will afford you a good rest that is important.(:

I do have a headboard but you can store anything. Its just a plain headboard. If I had one like that I know my cat would be constantly in there.LOL I hardly ever lean up against thou. But it looks nice. Its dark wood and I have the big posts on the bed.

I have pleasant memories of the beds in our house when I was growing up, TerryZ, and they all had nice headboards. I think it boils down to you're either a headboard person or not, lol.

My bed that I have, I dont have a headboard and we dont even have a frame for it. I have an extra king size bed so the matteress are on the floor which is fine with me it kind of keeps the mattress firmer longer.

I used to often sleep with my mattress and box spring on the floor, hoghoney! It felt very liberating to me. It used to drive my mother mad because she couldn't understand why I didn't want to put the bed up, lol.

No I do not have a headboard. I'm not sure if I would like one or not...I don't think I have ever had one. I would probably hit my head on it after waking up lol. So I probably would not like one.

Ah, dopey, but that is why you have pillows. They are there to prevent you knocking your head against the headboard, lol.

Well my bed does have a headboard, and a mirror on it to boot. But the downside to having a headboard with a bed is that sometimes the top mattress slides off and the pillows slide to the gap in the back near the bottom mattress. This happened to me many times so much that in a few instances it knocked out the power plugs from the sockets in my room, cutting off almost all my electricity. It's such a nuisance. Plus headboards are noisy with the banging and the hard wood and said mattress sliding...

Yes, DuoMaxwell, headboards can be a nuisance. That is one reason why I gave mine up. I think a bed looks more complete with the headboard, but I don't mind not having one so long as mine is comfortable.

Yes, 3lilangels, you can do wonders to decorate the area surrounding your bed with a little imagination. I am more on that page right now than on the headboard thing.

I didn't have a headboard for years until I found an antique headboard and footboard in an old abandoned barn. Guess it was worth the wait!

Our bed in our room do ahs a headboard. My hubby and i chose it because of our children. It serves as their boundaries so they will not fall nor commit injuries when they are so active. Kids are our main concern in buying anything inside our house. We always choose those that are safe or less risky.

The safety of children is always important, iza, but I was referring mostly to the aesthetic value of a headboard.

Our current bed has not headboard. It is a platform bed, it is a great modern looking piece of furniture.

I think that's great, sedel, those are some very stylish beds. I think the most important piece of furniture in the house is probably the bed.

I like beds with headboards. Though I like the ones with bookcase where I can store stuff, I'd rather have a plain headboard than no headboard. I feel very uncomfortable sleeping on a bed with no headboard.

We currently don't have a headboard for our king sized bed, even though I have always like beds that did have headboards. This one was bought second hand and came as it is.

Well, maddysmommy, you can always add a headboard if you decide to. The last time I bought one I had to pay a little more than I would have liked for it, but I really did like it.

I agree, for the most part, Aurone, however I have done some interesting things with the wall directly over my bed. With a bit of imagination you can come up with something really nice.

I do not have one. I have a picture above my bed. If I were to have one it would be a padded one that would help keep the pillows in place. I really don't prefer one way or another. Not having one is no big deal.

They can look very nice with a big picture hanging above them, jillhill. There are so many ways you can decorate the area over your bed.
