I guess that depends on the extent to which you trust strangers. I'm too paranoid to be able to live with a stranger. The one time when I was forced to do so (in college) I drove her crazy because I was always so paranoid, and she couldn't deal with it. She automatically expected me to trust her because some random system had decided we were going to be roommates, and I just freaked out all the time because she was always around, and I felt like I was in danger 24/7. I suppose for a normal person (ie not crazy like me) it wouldn't be a big deal to live with a stranger. But I would pick an ex-friend over a stranger, because there had to be some reason you decided to be that person's friend in the first place!

it depends on how much you have problem with your ex- friend or stranger. In choosing room mates, most of the time we have no choice but to live with starngers. I had this experience as i was working in a different city. But every time i found they may have some peculiar habits, i was good in adjusting. There can be all with habits that you don't like, be it stranger or friend. So chose according to your comfort.

if I were to choose, i'd have a stranger. why? because it will be more easy to adjust to someone you don't know. you have start from the beginning-- getting to know the person. And if you don't like the person, since you're not friends, you may ignore the person without really feeling uncomfortable. thanks
