Do you open your door to strangers?

I was sitting in my kitchen this morning when I saw two men that I have never seen in the neighborhood walking across the street to my house. The rang the doorbell but I didn't answer it. There were no cars around with marking like the cable company or telephone so I just sat while they rang then knocked on the door. I am not opening my door to strangers, even if it is broad daylight. Do you?

Normally I do. I live in a very safe neighborhood (I think it was ranked #4 in top places to live by Money magazine in 2006 or something) and I don't see why not.

Good for you. Living by myself I am very hesitant to open the door. Unless I know someone is coming and they havne't been here before. My friends us the back door.

I usually do, but we live in a pretty safe neighborhood. All the neighbors tend to watch out for each other too. If I'm home alone though sometimes I won't just because I'd rather be safe then sorry.

That's a good rule to live by. I live alone...so they don't get the chance to get to know that fact. For a while we had some going through the neighborhood and they were knocking and trying the door knob. What they would do if you didn't answer is quickly open the door and try to grab something from you house..most of the time purses.

I, personally don't open the door for strangers. I've gotten out of the habit of checking who is knocking on our apartment door before opening it, even though I really should because really, even on a college campus, in a college dorm you just never know. Not anymore at least. When I'm home alone, being a 21 year old female, I don't answer the door unless I know who it is. Otherwise, I sit and let the dog bark and the people knock.

You are a very smart girl! Too many young women your age disappear at the hands of someone who is not totally with the program. It's a good measure to protect yourself!

I do not make a habit of it. we get a lot of people coming up our drive too as we are on a curve of a major highway and it seems peoples cars like to konk out here - there are more houses on our street but the way our drive way is it appears that it is a continuation of the road we live on and that perhaps we are the only house. I do not like openning the door to strangers, I feel guilty about this sometimes.

I don't think you should feel guilty! In this day and age it's very scary to open the door to someone you don't know!

I've heard way too many horror stories to do so. However, now I live on a very safe Air Force Base, so likely I would answer the door. If men were coming to my door, it might be something about my husband, like if had gotten hurt or something.

i think that anyone that's willing to open the door for strangers in this day and age need to reevaluate their will to live. that's pretty brave for 2 guys to walk up to the door and start knocking! you were right not to open the door!!!

I don't open doors to strangers because of the news that i heard here that a mad rapist would knock at your door and if you open it then you will be raped and killed. I don't know if this is true but definitely I'm gonna be on the lookout.

No I usually dont open my door to strangers either. I have a screened door that I keep locked so I can talk to someone through the door. I always keep my front door open during the day time for extra sunlight. I think you did the right thing.

For some reason it made me nervous. I wish I had a screen door to keep lock...that would be the best solution.

i will feel the same thing jillhill, i'll be afraid to open the door to strangers specially if i have a bad feeling that they don't work as a delivery boy, utility company or i haven't seen them before. my husband always tell me not to open the door to strangers, see what he/she wants first and if your sure they won't do any harm and you know what they want then you can be safe to open the door. it's always good to be careful than be sorry in the end, specially when you are just alone in the house. God bless!

most of the time i have to. say i am little reluctant to open the door as i believe it is not safe. But there are some times when you need to as those strangers may have come for some work. Still i ask from inside who is this. if i am satisfied with the answer, then i open the door.

If you are expecting a service person I agree you have to open the door. It's when you aren't that you need to be careful.

Dear jillhill, Generally in India, people will open the doo immediately, eve if they are strangers. Here in India, nothing serious can happen. There are isolated cases where opening the door to the strangers, they turned out of thieves. Otherwise, people in general will open the door to strangers. One more thing is if some stranger came and knock your door, next house ladies/gentlemen have the habit to find out who are the strangers knocking the door. Therefore, there is no danger by opening the door to strangers.

I donnot open my door to strangers, either.Beacuse not everyone is the angle in the world, some of them may do bad thing to you.If they really want to find you and tell you something, they must know your phone number and they would call your name out the door,if they do nothing just knock at the door,I will not open my door to them.
