Obviously, I am not a native speaker. I have been in USA for 9 months, however, I have not improvements in English, because all colleagues in our lab are Chinese. And I only speake Chinese all day. And I tried to attend all kinds of events or activities to improve oral English. However, the improvement is very little. And, I tired to speak English with my colleagues. The feeling is very weird. When I meet an American people in the street or supermarker, I want to talk with him or her. I know most of American are nice and patient, however, I don't know how to communicate with them. And what kind of subject is what Americans are interested in. Please help me! Thanks! Welcome any suggestions.

We do not know anything at birth. But as we grow we learn, more and more as days go by. I suggest that you acquire a vocabulary book from Chinese to English and vice versa then also have a dictionary so that you can look up the meaning of words which you hear which you do not understand. It takes patience and interest to learn anything. Since you are in the U.S. where the language is English, you can easily learn to speak English. For grammatical English, first the vocabulary then acquire also a book on English grammar. In the Philippines, English is used as a medium of instruction and we have many English subjects up to college level.

One more thing, watch english movies. If you have a hard time, try with translations. That's what I am doing with Japanese. I'm trying to learn Japanese so I watch movies from crunchyroll.com so I can practice the words I hear.

In the philippines, English is part of the curriculum in school. From grade 1 to college, english is there. and in fact, it's used as a medium of instruction. One way to learn english is to get hold of a dictionary. Everytime you see a word that you're not familiar with, check the meaning. list down words that are new to you. Another way is read books, english books and check words in the dictionary. Check basic grammar in english books. Have friends to communicate in English. Make friends with some people who can speak and write english. That's one way to practice your english. You're english writing is already okey. Try to listen more to how americans speak.
