Meet the new addition to my cat family SYLVESTER

Hello to all cat lovers on MyLot. Please meet the newest addition to our cat family - Sylvester. He is a 5 years old male, and so to see he is for at least half Norvegian Forest Cat, but could be also 100% :). I saw him in the shelter last Saturday and told my partner we have to take him with us because we were told that if no one adopted him by Friday this week - he will be euthanised. Sylvester kept watching me and while telling me somehow: "Please, take me with you, and don't let them kill me, please". I was crying my eyes off and even though my partner wasn't willing to take yet an other cat he gave in, and so we went and took him today. There will be some problems with my other cats, and especially Chicha the Queen, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to have them get used to eachother so that I can keep him without causing more stress to the already stressed female cats in my household. I have 2 weeks to see how it is going and can bring him back to the shelter if it doesn't work out. I am about to do the very best I can to keep him though. As he is the sweetest and loveliest male cat I have ever had. he is all thetime on my lap and purring , and kissing, wow, how much love this cat had to give and i am so glad he is here with us now :) If I could, I would have taken not only him, but yet an other one, that I was in love with too, but there is no place for that many cats here, as 7 will be already too much for the added costs. I'll attach one photo of him here that I took a few minutes ago, and will write on my cat blog www.mycat.be about him tomorrow as well, while uploading more photos. TheFortunes

Well Ourdew, 5 of the 6 are in terror of him, and only Chicha is fighting him while not even the half of his weght and size. She feels her position threatened by him and screams and hisses even harder than he does. I am praying that I'll be able to change his behaviour and keep him here so that we can live long together :) TheFortunes

Hi LilyoftheThorns and thank you for the lovely words and for lovig him :) He is a marvel of a cat when only with me or with my partner, as he is so sweet, and caring, and wants to be petted and climbs on our laps continuosly. He becomes a terror when he sees one of my other cats though and becomes dangerous. he almost took my eye off today and I am wounded now...Plus he is very string, and huge, and now I know why they placed him in a shelter, he becomes unreliable/unpredictible and because of it dangerous when feeling that someone else might get any attention from the humans he loves and thinks are HIS ... LOL - I hope I can make a change in his behavious as I would hate it to give hum up and back to the shelter TheFortunes

I have heard that some cats respond very well to a tranquilizing medicine. You might want to check with the vet for a trial run--see how much it costs and if it works. Good luck.

Hi SusieQ and thanks for the nice words and for the idea. We did actually get some tranquilizers yesterday and lets hope it will work as I want Sylvester to stay and have all peace around again TheFortunes

Wow he is a beauty! I wish they had a shelter around here because we have so many strays out here. But if we did have a shelter I would probably be having way too many cats here too cause I wouldn't be able to leave them there. For the strays here I feed them and try to help them out. Three have become members of the family. It is really hard with the expense to keep more kitties, and in my rental agreement I am not suppose to have any pets at all. Congrats on your new addition and good luck getting the others to accept him.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear that it isn't going well. If you have to give him back don't feel bad. You have been trying way more than some other people would. Sometimes it is just too much. I have virile cats here in the woods out back that can't go near humans. I leave them food but they would never be able to be in my house. They are wild animals now. I wouldn't call animal control because they are not able to be placed in any home and would be put down. You are so kind to keep trying, but sometimes it can't work. Good Luck! Hope your eye is better soon!

My eye is better now Vicky, and thank you my friend. We did purchase some tranquilizers and have him on his own for now, and I am giving him as much attention as i can, and he seems to like it. Tomorrow I'll try letting him with the others again and hope well TheFortunes

He's one good-looking cat! And he looks intelligent, too. It makes me sad knowing that he could've been euthanised if you weren't in the shelter just in time. I can't imagine my only cat, Majzhai, suffering the same fate. You see, Majzhai might be sent to the shelter when my sister gives birth in November and so I'm actually thinking of moving out and bringing him with me instead.

Thank you Dreamleaper, and yes, this breed of cats are very intelligent. I only wish I would be able to change his behaviour and soon. This pretty boy is dagerous as he almost blinded me this evening ;( I hope that you'll be able to move before having to give your cat up my friend , I will pray for you TheFortunes

I hope you're kidding Dreamleaper as de-lawing is a total NO NO thing to do, and I would never ever thing about it even. Cutting his nails is one thing, de-clawing a totally different story.Besides the fact that it is against the law here in The Netherlands, and I guess in the rest of Europe too. It is a very cruel thing to do really. TheFortunes

thanks, fortunes... you better have him de-clawed before he blinds you... as for me, i've got vertical scratches on my wrist because i startled Majzhai one time when he was so sound asleep and curled up and i hugged him. silly me. lol!

awww.. that is so sweet of you! seldom do I meet people here who would be willingly take home a cat from a shelter. well, we don't exactly have a shelter here.. ^__^;; and I can't believe that cats as beautiful as sylvester are being left in a shelter! here, only stray cats will be found in a shelter if weever have one. ^__^;; he's just so cute from the picture! and fluffy. he looks like my favorite anime cat named karupin. I think you were not mistaken when you adopted him. he seems so sweet. I was surprised when you said that if you didn't take him, they'll euthanise him. is that allowed? I mean, it seems a pity and cruel to kill such a sweet and cute helpless cat. (but I wouldn't object if they'd euthanise the stray and bad cats in our neighborhood ^__^;;) wouldn't that be a violation of animal rights?

Hi Secretbear, its a long story - about 20 years ago when this place opened its doors it was only a shelter for stray cats and dogs, and for the once that were brought there by their owners because of problems with the pets. It grew however, and with time, it became a veterinary clinic, a shop for food and appliances for animals, a behavior therapy center for all kind of animals, and an hotel for animals when the owners are on holiday. When people bring there their animals as they don't want them anymore - they are paying $75 for a cat and $95 for a dog. When someone adopts one of these pets they are paying $150 for a cat and $175 for a dog. They get papers from the veterinary clinic of all the shots that have been given against all types of diseases, a passport and the chip ID number. All the animals have been provided with a chip so that they can be found if lost or stolen. The cats and dogs come neutered and castrated too. There was problem with the behavior of Sylvester and this is why he was in the shelter. Read my reply to Pye above so that I don't write the same all over again. Thanks for your wishes, and I need some kind of miracle and happening quickly as Sylvester is dangerous, and my partner wants him gone if he attacks one of us again :( TheFortunes

Congrats on the new addition. Hope everything works out with your other cats. I have 3 cats but one is a lil b*tch who thinks the other 2 should get out and tells them that all the time. Wish I could take another in but these guys/gal are enough. There is one at the humane society that is a young adult male who would make a great addition to our household. Already held him and found he's a real cuddlier. -sighs- Sylvester will find his niche among the clan and then you will have peace again..somewhat. lol

He is gorgeous! I'm so glad you adopted him and hope things work out. Our "king" cat didn't care for the new ones we brought home last year, but he tolerated them. He seems to be getting almost friendly now.

You are nice person and very kind to pet animal, but I'm interested to know further about, how they "euthanise" the cat, I mean what 'humanely' method they will use.
• Netherlands
12 Oct 07
They do it with a shot filled with venom. It works very quickly I am told and the animals dont feel any pain as they fall asleep. The same venom is used for the euthanasation of humans I've been told. TheFortunes
