School lunches

For those of you with young children, how much do you pay for school lunches? I have 2 children in school right now, 1 in 1st grade and 1 in 7th grade. I am paying just over $150.00 a month for school lunches!! Is that ridiculous? And to top it off, they aren't that great. My 1st grader is a picky eater but I hate sending cold food to school with him everyday. We live in a small rural community in the midwest. I was just interested to know what other areas are paying for the school lunches.

My goodness! My mom used to give me 10-15 dollars a week for lunch, yeah that was still expensive, but still not even close to what you're paying! Are you sure that it's all going for lunch? I know that some kids in school would just say they needed so much and keep most of it for themselves to go to the movies or whatever.

We have online access to their lunch accounts. They have to deposit the money into their account and use like a credit card in the cafeteria so I know they are using the money for lunches. Now sometimes my youngest is eating breakfast there too but still it's just ridiculous. I remember when I was in school my mom would give me $5.00 a week and that would be it. I think just the regular lunch at their school is almost $3.00!

Um, well it's called inflation. Everything gets more expencive as time goes on. In 1948 you could get a movie ticket, popcorn, soda and candy for $1.50. Now, it's about $25. Are you having a hard time paying for food, or are you just not aware of the concept of inflation?

GloomCookieLex are you talking to me? Because I just graduated not too long ago....and I doubt inflation is really that much for school lunches.

My son gets free school breakfast and lunch. Otherwise it is $1.10 a day. He is in 2nd grade and is fairly picky as well. He sometimes requests a sack lunch when he REALLY hates what they are having for lunch. The food at his school is actually pretty good though and there are only a few days a month where he is taking a lunch. Oh, and we live in Missouri.

Hi- I have a second grader and a fifth grader. We live in a rural area in NY state. I pay $20 per child for 10 lunches, so a total of $80 per month. Wow - you guys are paying like twice that! Outrageous!

I think it is normal. You pay $75 each of them, and it means $.5-4 per day for each of your children.(teh students go to school mostly 20 day in a month). In my area we pay at least $4 each day.

Sometimes I used to hate school lunches, I would avoid eating if I could because they were so bad at times, my mother and grandmother taught me how to make lunches, and I took those to school. I got creative with my lunches.

We live in Michigan near The Detroit area and I have 3 kids in school. I think the lunches are $2.35. Do you have a reduced lunch program. Here we do. You fill out a form with your income and how many family members you have. I filled out the form last year and got reduced lunch and had to pay .40cents, this year my kids get free lunch. Look into it its worth it.

School lunches here are 90 cents a day. They also have a program for low income families though where you can get half priced or even free lunches. I applied for my daughter when she started preschool this year and we got approved for free lunches. So luckily I don't have to pay anything. although i still do because she is a picky eater and mostly packs her lunch.

When I was in high school a few years ago, the school lunch was $2.25 a day. If I had 2 kids, paying for their school lunch for a month would only be about $100 here, give or take. However, I don't have kids yet and when I do I'd like to pack their lunches most days because it is healthier and cheaper. I plan on letting them buy a few times a week but not always.
